You know what? I am using the same setup here also, and would like some info
on that also. My computer gives a few beeps, and waits for me to type dos or
linux. That would be nice to have.

You can get a talking lilo prompt by placing
the following line near the top of your lilo.conf file:
serial=0,9600N8

That assumes you are using COM1 i.e. /dev/ttyS0. If you are using com2
try:
serial=1,9600N8

Hi Jim,

I am not using either serial port; the doubletalk pc is an internal isa
card. Do you know if I can still get lilo to talk?

Thanks,

William

Why then, does my double talk pc work without isapnp? I thought isapnp was
needed for all isa cards, or does speakup get it even though the OS doesn't
really know about it, like windows screen readers, never show the
synthesizer in device manager.

Hi Brent:

Probably, because the DoubleTalk PC really doesn't need that much
configuration--from what I understand, it uses one i/o address and it's
pretty much the same unless you change it with jumpers. All Speakup has
to do is use the proper address.

Hi gang -

On the matter of the lilo prompt, I have tailored my lilo configuration to
give me a beep when it is ready for my intervention, then wait two seconds
before going into its default choice. I am using a Doubletalk internal
card, and this method works great for me. For those who are interested, I
include a copy of my configuration below. Hopefully you can separate the
weed from the chaff. The file called "boot.msg" is a one-liner which
contains the ascii bell character (ascii 7 or ^G) along with the following
text:

Default or l for Linux, r for Rescue, d for DOS\a

Now, here is the lilo configuration file:

# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
prompt
timeout = 20
message = /boot/boot.msg
vga = normal # force sane state
 ramdisk = 0     # paranoia setting
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda3
  label = l
  read-only # Non-UMSDOS filesystems should be mounted read-only for checking
# Linux bootable partition config ends
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda2
  label = r
  read-only # Non-UMSDOS filesystems should be mounted read-only for checking
# Linux bootable partition config ends
# DOS bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
  label = d
  table = /dev/hda
# DOS bootable partition config ends

----------

Hope this helps someone...
Chuck.

Hi William,
I guess when I read Doubletalk PC, I translated it to Doubletalk LT. I'm
afraid I can't give you any more guidance than Chuck did, running a card
makes things a little more difficult in this regard. Incidentally, I have
written a beeper program that writes directly to the PC speaker, but it
wouldn't work at the Lilo prompt because it still depends on system calls.

My next step is to rewrite it so that it will use the PC speaker device
driver, or maybe even the sound card if any.

Hi all: If we want the lilo prompts to talk for internal cards such
as the DoubleTalk PC and the Accent PC, lilo will need to be
modified. It is on my list of related things to be done but way down
the list. Lilo is written in assembler but shouldn't be difficult to
modify for a person fairly comfortable with x86 assembler. So, how
about volunteers to take on the project?

The doubletalk card doesn't use an IRQ. This is why it doesn't show up in
device manager. It's also therefore not a plug and play device, so you
don't need isapnptools. In fact, if you did have a plug and play speech
card then speakup as it currently is would have problems.

I thought linux has no support for isa devices, so isapnp tools is still
needed.

Linux has lots of support for ISA devices. It's just that ISA plug'n'play
cards need to be allocated an IRQ, which is what ISAPNPTOOLS is used
for. NB: I've never had to use it so don't ask me for anymore detail than
that. I'm certain other listers have though.

It is really easy:
put the following line in your /etc/lilo.conf after the first or second line
just to make it look nicer:

serial=0,9600n8

For whatever reason, Doubletalk LT swallows part of the welcome message, but
you can hear some speech anyway.

Vic

If you want it to have it sit for a limited time, you do timeout = 20 for
two seconds.

How do I do it in debian? How do I do this, talking lilo? Mine just boots
to windows if I don't hit shift in time. It's not real bad, as I know when
to on this machine, but my laptop beeps like mad when I do something
similar holding f8 to get to dos to type the loadlin command, and it
doesn't like when I press f8 right after I hear the floppy check, it seems
to get to that point a little later, but when, I'm not sure. Is there a way
to have it make a sound when I can press the key to get the prompt?

I had a sighted friend set this up, and you get a series of beeps after it
boots, and then it will wait all day until you type dos or linux. I don't
know how he made it have the delay. Will give him a buzz and ask him
sometimes.

I have an internal card.

    You can get a talking lilo prompt by placing
    the following line near the top of your lilo.conf file:
    serial=0,9600N8
    That assumes you are using COM1 i.e. /dev/ttyS0. If you are using
    com2 try:
    serial=1,9600N8

Hi listers,

I have seen several of you mention a talking lilo prompt. I am interested
in this, could someone tell me how to set it up?

I am using RedHat linux 6.1, and a doubletalk pc with speakup 0.09.

Thanks much,

William
