Hi folks,

Since posting my last message about kernel re-compilation I've booted again
with the same result as previously.  However, this time I hit the Control
key to shut SpeakUp up a little and found that I got some warnings like
"/boot/system map contains an incorrect kernel version" - I imagine that
this means I need to tweak something somewhere in order to reflect the fact
that "uname -r" now reports 2.2.14 instead of my old 2.2.12.  I might be
missing punctuation in the message, so don't treat it as verbatim.  My linux
image statement in lilo.conf is /vmlinuz and, obviously this file exists at
root (I checked, honest).

Could this account for my i586 errors, which come up later after the speech
stops?

I'm going to try a "make config" tomorrow when my helper is around again,
but if anybody has any ideas in the meantime I'd love to hear them.

Oh I should read your messages more thoroughly.  The config settings are
stored in /usr/src/linux/.config, assuming you compiled from
/usr/src/linux.  This file is generated by the make config process and is
what make oldconfig refferences.

Hi Again Tim:  No.  That warning is telling you that you didn't copy
the System.map file in /usr/src/linux into either / or /boot after the
compile.  It depends on what your distribution is expecting as where
to find the file.  It is a warning though and should not cause a
problem running, but you'll want to correct the situation to avoid
continuous messages when running ps and the like.

Hi,

Thanks, Kirk, you were right about copying the System.map file - I copied it
into /boot and the errors went away.

I've booted a few times now and found that SpeakUp can be made to carry on
talking - it seems to depend on when I hit the Control key during system
initialisation - I haven't yet pinned down a recognisable point when it's a
good idea.  If I don't press ctrl then SpeakUp stops talking eventually (I
assume a buffer overflow), but it can also clam up if I press it at the
"wrong" time during the start-up process.  I'll carry on fiddling and see if
I can pin this behaviour down.  I can usually get success after two or three
restarts, so it's not too bad.

My plan for tomorrow is to rebuild the kernel again - firstly to try and get
rid of my i586 errors and secondly to get my rtl-8029 Ethernet card to work.

Hi Tim:  I can't remember if I have mentioned it or not, but you
should use the chord-s speech box mode.  You'll get better results
with that I believe.

Hi:

Copying the system.map file will have cured it this time.  Next time you
upgrade the kernel version,, you'll have to do it again.  I'd suggest
making a link to the root directory from where the system looks for it so
you don't have to worry about it.

Hi folks,

I thought I'd successfully re-compiled my kernel with SpeakUp, but I appear
to have been wrong.  When the machine boots my synthesizer (Braille 'n
Speak) starts to talk but stops when the O/S reports an error that my 2.2.14
kernel can't be run on an i586.  When I compiled the kernel I cheated and
did a "make oldconfig" instead of a "make config", partly to save time and
partly to avoid some of the questioning that might lead me astray.  Is this
where I went wrong?  Do I need a different copy of the source (Red Hat 6.1)?
I should state that linux continues to load and allows me to log in, but
with no speech.  If I do "uname -r" I get the correct kernel version back
(i.e. 2.2.14 instead of my previous 2.2.12).

Help!  I'm so near, yet so far!

Hi Tim:  You might want to recompile with make config and just check
each of the menu choices.  If you have run it before  it will have
your previous choice and you can just hit return to accept the choices
you know are correct.  I appears that maybe your processor type got
changed some how and it won't run code compiled on a processor grate
than what you have.
