Janina,

I have an idea to try. On most machines the first entry in the hosts file
is 127.0.0.1 localhost. What happens if you change this to your machine
name on the network? I realize there is reason to not leave it this way,
but it might lend to the end fix.

Hi, Kirk:
Thanks for the suggestion. I did as you suggested and temporarily moved
the top line of /etc/hosts down to be the second line, so that
toccata.grg.afb.net would be the first machine defined for address
127.0.0.1. Regretably, this did not do the trick. The log of a fetchmail
session is below.

RE your attempt to send to me directly on this machine, tthe grg.afb.net
domain is not resolvable. It is not registered anywhere, and has no name
server.

Here's the fetchmail session:

Janina Sajka 23.03.01:

HI Janina.

Make sure localhost resolves 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.1 resolves
localhost with nothin trailing. Some distributions, Redhat iirc lacks a
period after
127.0.0.1	localhost
in /etc/hosts and it makes resolver add it's own idea about domain of
'localhost'. Try adding that period if it is not there..

Hi, Ari:

Yes, nslookup 127.0.0.1 yields name = localhost.

and nslookup localhost yields address 127.0.0.1

However, and here's the problem, I think:

nslookup toccata.grg.afb.net yields:

Server: 127.0.0.1
Address:	127.0.0.1#53

** server can't find toccata.grg.afb.net.: NXDOMAIN

Hmm... would it help if you put something like

127.0.0.1 localhost. toccata.grg.afb.net.

to /etc/hosts. After this resolver should be able to resolve that name
to localhost. (Check it with 'host', 'nslookup' will use only bind
daemon, not entire resolv library.)

Did i remember corretcly you had problems with incoming mail. There
may be other solutions for this problem. One is define sendmail w-macron
to include toccata.grg.afb.net so it will consider it a local
domain. Not sure about sendmail 'cos i switched to qmail after two years
of desperate:>

That is what I would expect, but it isn't happening, and I don't know why.
Here's the top of /etc/hosts:

127.0.0.1 localhost toccata.grg.afb.net
127.0.0.1 toccata.grg.afb.net toccata

And here's the output of nslookup toccata.grg.afb.net:

Server: 127.0.0.1
Address:	127.0.0.1#53

** server can't find toccata.grg.afb.net.: NXDOMAIN

I think you have to have a real ip address to do with your name --
either a static one to use with ppp, or a dynamic one assigned via ppp
-- static is better as you can put it in your host file and then if
your machine is not named localhost your problems should be solved.

This is my $0.02.

My default hosts file which came from the Slackware 7.1 distro contains a
very interesting comment which might be causing some of your problems.
Let me attach my hosts file into this message including the original
comments. I do not name my machine on the 127.0.0.1 (loop back) address.
I put my machine name on the network address (192.168.1.1 in this case.
------ hosts file -------
#
# hosts This file describes a number of hostname-to-address
# mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
# used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
# On small systems, this file can be used instead of a
# "named" name server. Just add the names, addresses
# and any aliases to this file...
#
# By the way, Arnt Gulbrandsen <agulbra@nvg.unit.no> says that 127.0.0.1
# should NEVER be named with the name of the machine. It causes problems
# for some (stupid) programs, irc and reputedly talk. :^)
#

# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1	localhost

192.168.1.2 steve.holmesgrown.com steve
192.168.1.3 winme1.holmesgrown.com winme1
192.168.1.4 lnx2.holmesgrown.com lnx2

# End of hosts.

What is in your host.conf file Janine? Lets check to make sure we are
looking in the right place for name resolution. Also are you using
sendmail, or another package such as exim?

You can put whatever you want into hosts file and it will not change
this. nslookup is going to the dns server. (The dns server doesn't care
about your hosts file even if it is on your machine.) To make this change
you need to make a start of authority on the DNS server. The DNS-HOWTO has
all the nitty gritty details.

Hi, Kirk:

I'm using sendmail 8.11.2 (believe that's it). /etc/host.conf is:

order hosts,bind

I think I started out like that, with only a 192.168 address for my fqdn
and only added it on 127 when things didn't work. I will try this again,
however, and will report.

You should take a look at the masqmail package. It is designed for dialup
machines not permanently connected to the internet. I've had some success
with it, and it's much easier than trying to get into the heads of the
authors of sendmail.

What you need to do to fix the nslookup is to have your isp change
your dns and mx records.

If they won't do that for you get another isp.

Also, they may need to change their host tables also.
You can use dig to find out what you have now.

This is actually a bit more involved with that. The domain in question
belongs to her employer. To properly update the reference would require
action by them. I don't think quitting a job over this issue would be
prudent.
