Hi:
I was looking at the various plans offered by our major phone company for
their cable service, and I began to wonder just how much data do I send and
receive via PPP per month? Would a volume-based account be OK if I didn't
exceed 500 MB? I guess I want to know if its possible to log data
transfered by an interface over a month or several in order to determin how
much I use.
Geoff.

It is possible yes;
You want to get and read the ipchains howto. I know how to do it with ipfwadm
but haven't migrated to ipchains yet.

Hi Geoff -
My "ppp-off" script reports how many bites sent and received every time my
connection is dropped. Would it be possible to accumulate those reports
somewhere for later analysis? Just a thought.

I would not find that 500 MB a month is any where near enough for me. Of
course if you use a browser that doesn't grab graphics it saves download
amounts. But when you have fast connections you realize that you can pull
down a good amount of software.
I have pulled down two versions of RedHat each over 500 MB in size. I have
also pulled down down both source and install cds for slackware 7.
Admittedly I have a cdburner. But I would never settle for a 500 MB a
month limit. I wouldn't be surprised if you exceed that with a dial-up. If
your use is typical when you first get fast access your usage will surge.
After a while ytou will grow accustomed and it will lower. But you will
probably find your usage is higher with fast access.
Keep in mind that it is no problem to check this or that web site. I know
I don't hesitate to check because I know that the site will come up while
I am talking or thinking about the site.

Hi:
I fully realise my usage will grow if let loose on a cable. I just want
some idea what my current usage is as a starting point.
Geoff.

You can use ipchains to get this information. But I think there are
programs that are made for the purpose. If you have a CD burner, I will
assure you that there will be no comparison. If you can afford it go
unlimited.

Hi:
It's actually not a matter of cost - the one I looked at actually make it
cheaper to go unlimited (believe it or not), but there are some speed
limits and an acceptable use policy that, if I could, I'd rather avoid, as
some of the definitions are a little cloudy.

hi, there. When you go to a cable, you will use the system continually,
because the access is ten times faster, sometimes 100 times faster. You
don't have as many breakups, and uploads and downloads are lots faster and
surrer.
