Not sure if I can find something like this, but I'm looking for an ftp
server that will let me keep track of who's uploading and downloading what
along with how fast the transfers are along with how much of the current
files are done....

work.

I'm using wu-ftpd now, and it shows me part of what I want, but not all...
it doesn't show me how fast things are going, or how much of something has
been uploaded. there might be a way to make it show that, but if there is
I haven't found it.

do u have speakfreely setup?
I'm on the reflecter if you want to join there.l
but to get u started, compile the proftpd sources and install them,
after that get back to me and I'll help you out there.
but, while I think about it, the first thing you'll need to do is remove
the entry in your inetd.conf file relating to your normal ftpd

I won't use wu.ftpd because of a serious security hole it has.

if u want to try proftpd again, either myself, Kirk or anyone else that
uses proftpd might be able to offer you some help.

I have two unrelated questions.

I just installed Alsa 0.5.11 drivers, library and utilities. So far, I
cannot get the OS to see the ESS 1868 sound card. I installed Alsa under
Slackware 8 running kernel version 2.2.20. Any ideas on what I could try?

Now, the Mutt question. How can I configure it to know what the POP3 and
SMTP servers on my ISP are? Will I have to use a third party app such as
fetch to bring down POP3 Email?

Thanks

Upgrade to alsa 0.90 beta 9, it seems to work so far.

As for your mutt question, with Linux, you are your own smtp server via sendmail now, so you don't need your isp for that.
At the end of your installk, slackware should've asked you which sendmail configuration you wanted to use.

As for pop3, you use a .fetchmailrc file for that in your home directory. Below is an example of mine with stars for my password.
Note that you might not want to use the set daemon line, because that will keep checking for mail every x (in my case 300 ) seconds. To get your mail once you have this file edited for your settings, simply type
fetchmail
. Chuck gave me a good explanation of fetchmail and sendmail which I archived for future reference. If he doesn't mind, and if I can findthe posts, I'll repost them here.

Hth.
Greg

poll icarus.cc.uic.edu protocol pop3
user gnowak1 password ****
fetchall
set daemon 300

Hi,

I just gotta ask! Since Icarus supports IMAP, why force fetchmail
to use pop3.

Hi, Gregg,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Yesterday was rebuild
the server date. If you do: "telnet icarus.cc.uic.edu 143", you'll see
the response from the IMAP server. I no nothing about your university,
but I no that edu institutions are adopting the IMAP protocol a bit
faster than the public ISPs. So I did a telnet to confirm it and
reported. Oh, cool! I see that it also supports ssh. You can most
likely use it to encrypt your fetchmail sessions. Try adding this line to
your .fetchmailrc
	       plugin "ssh %h /usr/sbin/imapd" auth ssh;

This assumes that the imapd executable is in the usual place on the
server. You'll be prompted for the password, just like in an ssh session.
To automate the process, you can generate a public and private key pair and
put the public key on the server.

          HTH.
          Bill

Thanks bill, I guess we all learn something new everyday (grin). I knew icarus supported ssh, but didn't know it supported imap.
