I'm currently using the 2.2.19 version of the kernel, I'm using debian,
and would like to update it to a newer version. I'm looking at the website
in another screen and I see two versions of the 2.4.9 kernel
linux-2.4.9.tar.gz.sign 16-Aug-2001 11:32 1k
and I see this one...
linux-2.4.9.tar.gz 16-Aug-2001 11:32 26.2M
I guess what I'm asking, is which one should I go get, or if not either of
those then what should I go get to update it?
thank you for your time.

You want either linux-2.4.9.tar.gz or linux-2.4.9.tar.bz2. The bz2 file is
a bit smaller, but otherwise they are the same. The tar.gz.sign files are
to verify that you have the file exactly as found on the ftp site.

That is the one I just installed ten minutes ago. She asked about 2.4.9 so
the info was for 2.4.9. As general info the same files exist for all the
different kernel versions.

ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/ look for whatever version you
want. I can verify the stability of 2.4.9 and at least I know that so far
speakup 1.0 works with 2.4.12. I haven't gotten farther than that.

Hi there.
Get the file that's just linux-2.4.9.tar.gz but then again we're up to
2.4.12 so maybe you'll want to get that one instead.
If your using the stable tree with out the security updates and such
you'll need to modify your /etc/apt/sources.list to get the latest package
lists.

Hi. before you switch to a 2.4x kernel with Debian you should check
out the web sight General for using 2.4x Kernels under Potato at
http://www.fs.tum.de/~bunk/kernel-24.html
Also, I found the kernel-package program made compiling and installing a
new Kernel a whole lot easier. You can install it by typing
apt-get install kernel-package
as root.

@What makes it easier by using this package? I'm curious is all. I
usually just do a make oldconfig after patching the new kernel using my
saved .config file, then make dep, make bzImage, move the kernel image
to it's appropriate place, make sure there is a kernel.old entry in
lilo.conf, lilo-v and reboot. All those steps I can do in my sleep.

Except for configuring, it does all those steps automatically.
Since it puts all the files for this in a Debian package, it makes
tracking, installing, and uninstalling easier.
I really screwed up my system by trying to type everything myself.
Now, I just have to worry about selecting the wrong options in
configuration <g>.
Oopse, almost forgot, since I create a .deb package it is easy to
compile a Kernel on one machine and install it on another.

To: Chris Norman, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Did you use
rpm -ihv kernel*.rpm
where kernel*.rpm is the speakup-modified one?
That should work.
I am not running fc4 so have not tried it.
Once installed, you might need to edit grub.conf to make sure that the
speakup-modified kernel is the one that will boot.

Hi people, I want to install the speakup modified kernel on FC4.
I tried and got a problem with the current kernel being newer than the
speakup modified one.
Here are the current kernels I have:
[chris@sparky ~]$ rpm -q kernel
kernel-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4
kernel-2.6.15-1.1831_FC4
[chris@sparky ~]$
How do I put the older speakup modified one in there?
Cheers,
Chris Norman
