     I read the readme file on the website to run the checkout script to
get the updates... but when I run it from
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/speakup
and then type ./checkout I get this message
patching version v22cvsroot not set. Enter it below or hit enter for
anonymous.
cvsroot>

     Then when I hit enter I get this message
./checkout: cvs: command not found.

     if anyone could help me with this I'd really appreciate it.

You need to install your distro's cvs package.
