speakup and VI

speakup and VI

[Deedra Waters]

     I've found an editor that I like. It appears to be complicated but I
learn fast and am picking up the basics rather quickly.I've got a question
though and maybe someone can help me with this

     I can use the speakup arrows to move threw text in my files easilly
enough, but when I try to use the arrow keys to move to certain points in
the file I cant, or rather it doesn't talk when I use them. Not sure if
maybe I'm doing something wrong, or don't understand something.

Hmm, the curser tracking has always been unparked, so if that's what you
meant then it's always been like that.
 but when I use the arrow keys it still doesn't read the text it just sits
there. but if I use the speakup keys it works just fine for  reading, but
I'm not sure if the normal curser is following the speakup curser or
not... I've got almost the same general problem with pine though. I can
move with the speakup curser but don't see the text of the message with
the a arrow keys.

The trouble I've got with pine though is when I backspace over a char it
doesn't read that so I don't know wether I've really fixed my mistakes or

Out of curiosity, what do you like about Vi?  I tried to use it a cupple
times, but I couldn't even figure out how to exit the dam thing!  Although
I hadn't read the man page or anything.

Hi, well, try turning Speakups curser tracking on, and then it should work
better.
to toggle curser tracking on or off use the numpad star key.
I've never liked Vi that much, and personally Emacs is much better.

If you press the numpad star the arrow keys should work fine.
I do it all the time under pine, Emacs, pico, and other apps and the regular
arrows work fine once curser tracking is on.
I'm not sure of which version of Speakup you are using, but I am using the
one that comes shipped with Slackware 8 and it does track pretty well in
apps.
If you are pressing the up, down, left, and right arrows without hering
anything the curser is moving but Speakup isn't simply reading the text. The
star key usually has Speakup catch up with the curser, and reads were the
curser is with the regular arrows.

This is what's known as the speakup cursoring problem.
You can turn on experimental cursor tracking with the numpad asteresk key.
However, use that spairingly.
You'll know what that means after you've used it for a while.

The backspace issue also happens in pico which is a part of pine of course.

Vi is a straight-forward quick and dirty type of editor.
Yes, reading the man page does help.
Vi is also discussed in a few unix books,
as it is a popular editor.

speakup and vi

I've gotten it to half work... If I use the arrow keys it'll read leter by
letter about 50 percent of the time but if I use the say line or word with
speakup keys it'll tell me where I am even though it doesn't read with the
arrow keys.
