Hello all,
I just recently got an aces netbok, and used grml with software speech to run a debootstrap.
The grml system works great with the hardware, and i have software speech, ethernet and sound for the install.
After I get it all installed, I don't have ethernet to run off of, so the idea was to put speakup on the system and use it to install and compile the drivers.
I'm having an issue, and I was wondering if anyone has found a workaround.
What I did was built speakup in a chroot, and pointed it to the linux headers for the kernel on the debian system, so it could build against those. I installed the modules, and have espeakup set to start at boot, with speakup_soft in the /etc/modules list.
I have Alsa installed, but am not receiving any sound; has anyone found a way to get that half of the mess working?
Thanks,
Tyler Littlefield

I apologize for being off topic and not answering your question, but this
brings up a good question. What is everyone's opinion about what the most
Speakup / Linux compatible Netbook is out there? I am wondering what
would work best and also what distros.
Thanks,
Pia

If your not receiving any sound try setting the volumes for the Master and
PCM controls and see what happens.
When playing around with Vinux a while back that's what I had to do once I
booted up my Asus 1000he net book.

Try running these commands (the final "on" does the unmuting):
amixer sset Master 100% on
amixer sset PCM 100% on
To see all the available settings, just type "amixer" and hit enter.
The man page you want is that for amixer.

hello chuck,
Thanks. I'll boot back to live with software speech and install amixer. I don't have speech on the install, so it is sort of a shot in the dark and hope it works.

Hello, I have a Asus 1000he, and I was abled to install archlinux on it
from the usb image.
The only thing I had to do was to turn off the quickboot option in the bios.
The quickboot partition enables the netbook to boot up quickly.
When I repartitioned my netbook I screwed up and got rid of the fastboot
partition and my Windows recovery partition.
Also, as a sidenote, when you use Linux on a 1000 series, like the ha or
he, you need to figure out some way of enabling the equal to the
super-he engine in Windows to enable the best battery life in Linux.
I think the superhe configurations come with the newest
laptop-mode-tools so you should be ok.

I was going off of what the guy at the store where I got it said, as I've not seen either brand before, I was looking around and it turns out the hardware from the lspci and that booted into grml didn't match an asus, so I went and had someone read the label to find the model. Turns out the guy can't read, and I've got an acer.
It's talked about modprobe snd_intel_hda, and I've tried that as well as using dashes instead of underline, to no affect for audio. unmuting doesn't seem to have done anything, either.
Any other ideas? as I said, I'm sort of shooting in the dark, as I have no sound and thus, no speech.

I also have the intel hda, and on my system there is a third setting
that needs to be unmuted, in addition to Master and PCM. It is "Front"
so you would also enter this:
amixer sset Front 100% on

Hi:
I suggest not to set volume to 100%.
When I set my Intel HDA to 100% there are no audio.
amixer set Master 80% on
amixer set PCM 80% on
amixer Front 80% on
80-90 should be a safe range.

seems Igot it working. I had to mknod /dev/dsp c 14 3 and the same for /dev/mixer, they kept disappearing on boot so I just added a script to startup that does that for me to solve the problem. Thanks all for the help, speech works great at boot now, I leave the networking nightmare for tomorrow.

You do have udev installed, right? Strange.

Hi Guys,
Whatever your problems are with Debian they aren't universal. I have a
system here which doesn't exhibit either symptom. /dev/dsp and friends
exist, and /dev/cdrom properly points to my drive.
I believe both these issues are taken care of by udev. I'd look there
to figure out what the problem is.
Best,
Zack.

Yeah, I have the same problem in Debian with it deleting the
/dev/cdrom symlink all the time. Wish the twerps at Debian would leave
well enough alone, since half the CLI programs still use the /dev/cdrom
symlink by default.

I had udev; it was installed on the system when I did the debootstrap, but installing it in systems where it wasn't previously installed seems to have broken many things. Udev has an amazing love for renaming things that don't need to be renamed, etc.
