OCR gets better!

Hi

Well I know that a number of us hang on to Windows for scanning the
printed word.  Well I feel like it's Christmas come early as my
favourite award winning OCR software Abbyy's Fine Reader is available
for Linux.

If anyone has already purchased Fine Reader for Linux could you report
on it's usability?  The website suggests that is usable from the command
line.

(software development kit) programmers will need to develop an application
to run around the fine engine kind of like kurzweil.

gnome debian testing

Hello.
I would love to get gnome 2.4 up and running on Debian testing.
Where are some good places to start? What exactly will I need installed
first? I installed the xbase packages under debian, but, need to get gnome
up and running. 
Are there any unofficial debian packages for gnome 2.4? I know slack has it
included in 9.1, has anybody tried making an alien debian package? I tried
looking at the gnome.org site but they have so many different files and
libraries there it is hard to know what exactly I need.

milestone.  Is there anyone on the list who could write a usable,
text-based front-end for this?  I would consider setting up a donation
system if there was someone...

command-line interface.  In addition to the sdk they also have a run-time
version.  When you look at the license info they mention a 60 day free
trial.  Not sure of any prices, but the runtime version would undoubtedly
be cheaper than the sdk.  We would probably need to use something like sane
to scan the images and pass the files into the Fine Read recognition engine.

I have already used sane quite successfully to scan. It was even giving
me access to the hardware buttons on my HP scanner.

I think Kirk has some early work on this in a package called Socrates.

Socrates calls Sane to scan, then Gocr to recognize the text.  It then
pipes the results through whatever pager is set by your $PAGER variable.
Gocr isn't all that good, and I found that while Socrates worked with my
old HP scanner, it did not with the Umax I now have because it scans in
color mode by default, which Gocr can't handle.  Fine is a very nice OCR
engine, but extremely slow.  I may have a look at their web site.  It's
too bad gocr isn't better, but I don't know of many people with the
knowledge of how OCR works who would be willing to produce a free OCR
engine.

Actually there is another ocr package which has come along recently.
I have been trying to find the time to check it out but I just haven't
been able to find extra recently.  The package is called ocrad and is
a gnu package.  I'll include the blurb below and maybe someone else
can look at it and report back. Well, damn it I won't include it below
because I cannot find it currently.  A google search should find it
though the package is called ocrad.

There is an open source ocr, Clara OCR, found at http://www.claraocr.org
that sounds interesting.
I have not used it yet, but from what I read, it may be accessible to us.
Even though it says it is written for the x-windows environment, it also
brags of having a Web interface.
If the Web interface is a full Web version of the application, then it
sounds like there may be a break through at last.

I also did a search on "open source ocr" on google, and the 2 that I found
came up the most are
clara ocr, already discussed, and gocr, formally jocr.
Both projects seem to be having some work done on them.

I don't know if this is the answer you were looking for, but it is all I
know for now.

Unless they've changed something Clara isn't accessible.  The web
interface is designed for sharing font images for a font database but
the operation is all 'X' or it was when I last looked at it.

Ocrad however does a pretty good job in general.  Not as good as the
commercial engines but all-in-all not bad.  There are debian packages
for ocrad and I imagine rpm as well.  I have been working recently on
improving socrates support to handle a range of engines and do some
hand and automated scanner control for things like resolution, scale
and contrast.

Yes, ocrad IMHO is better than gocr.
Abby for linux is not available as single-user license and the sdk which 
includes a command-line client is priced at around $7000.00

The last time I have tried to compile socrates I got errors.
