I know ... what a subject line. LOL!

Gregory, I know you're working hard on this, but thought I'd query the list
to see if anyone had any suggestions for either of us. To make a long story
short, folks, Gregory Nowak has been working his fingers to the bone for the
last several days, trying to help me get my modem working under zipspeak8.0.
We've discovered a bug in Zipspeak which I believe the maintainer has been
made aware of, and doesn't really concern this problem. anyhow, he's
compiled a kernel for me, and it does seem to detect my modem while booting,
but at the end, I get the message stated in the subject of this e-mail.

Is there a way to pass an init command to the kernel using the linux.bat
file? How is it done ... and I mean *exactly* how, LOL! As in "you type the
following *here*" LOL!

Anyway, folks, if any of you have any ideas, Gregory and I would appreciate
it. He seems, in theory, to have possibly solved my m modem problem for me.
Although, since I can't log in, I can't say for sure that he has.

In short .... HELP PLEASE???? <smile>

Forgetting why she wanted to try Linux to begin with LOL,
~Ann

Just to add to this, I've booted Ann's kernel using loadlin on a linux box, and am now installing zipspeak 8.0 on a windows box to try to boot it there, and see what I get. When I booted it on the linux box, it booted just fine.

Hi

Well I can't give you exact instruction as I don't know what is required
for the modem. If you've been reading you should know what it requires.
I guess that you need parameters passing to the kernel. Such as port
and irq, although, I would have thought that it was a plug n play
device. But if it does need parameters passing to the kernel, you just
append them to the loadlin line of your batchfile.

A quick search on google is likely to provide you with step by step
instruction.

That's assuming that it is down to the modem, as you haven't stated
exactly when this occurs. It may be that something else has been
changed.

It occurs right when one should be about to get ready to log in. "Cannot
open initial console" comes just before the kernel panic message about no
init found.

It sounds like you corrupted something. If you replace this kernel with
the original kernel, will it boot? If so, than it's something about the
way the kernel was built. Greg, did you include UMSDOS support? Ann is
using Zipspeak, and must have that to boot! What about PCI support? Like
I said, check the obvious. If the old kernel won't boot, then something
got corrupted. In that case, a reinstall may be needed, but let's hope
not!

Yes, it's got umsdos and pci support. I've now installed zipspeak, and am having the same problem. I'll have to recheck the kernel config.

I just remembered that when Slackware 8.0 first came out, they said not to
use a 2.4.X kernel with Zipspeak because UMSDOS didn't work right.
However, this was 2.4.5, and I figured that they would have fixed this by
now, but maybe not.

Really? What do you mean FAT is broken? I am using kernel 2.4.18 and
have no problems with reading MSDOS or Windows files. I just meant that
maybe UMSDOS was not quite right.

I'm compiling 2.4.5 for Ann, simply because the config for it was already there, and all I had to do is modify certain espects of it. The idea was that when Ann gets to feel comfortable with compiling her own kernel, she could go up to 2.4.18. I may try compiling 2.4.18, and see if that works. If it does, then I hope Ann won't mind downloading the kernel and modules off my site again.
Greg
P.S. Thanks for letting us know.
