I am attaching my lilo.conf file to see if anyone can tell
me what is wrong with it that makes my system not boot with speakup
talking.

Ok, does the system boot?
If it does, and just doesn't talk, then I think I can help you with the
problem.
Unless you've explicitly defined a default synthesiser when you compiled
the kernel, then you need to add a line like this to the global section of
your lilo.conf:
append "speakup_synth=synth"
Where synth is the 4-6 letter code for your synthesiser.
If it's just not booting, then I don't know, and I have a similar problem,
and may have to play with rdev.

Hi
Well I've only seen the intrd line used for root images that contain
installers and modules, not a kernel so I don't know what that means.
But the rest seems ok, depending the device names are correct.

My system boots alright, but unless I hit a control X at boot time and type
in the Linux parameter for speakup, I do not get any speech.

Hi Bill,
Well, I learned something. I didn't know about the control-x
trick--thanks.

Hi,
the iso's are on the speakup ftp site. I used them friday night to go from
skipjack beta to valhalla release code. Unlike others, I did not experience
any complaints about the images from the installer. It loaded the athlon
specific kernel during the install and came up just fine. The only
complaint I have is that the installer doesn't track the proper item in some
menus. Furtunately the package selection menu tracks.

Hi Richard,
Yes! RedHat 7.3 installation replaced the Kernel; thus Speakup is no
longer running. Hopefully, a new modified installation set of RedHat (for
7.3) will be avail soon for new installers, and some sort of upgrade path,
or carefully documented procedures, will be available for
upgraders. Unfortunately, I just haven't had sufficient time to handle
anything like that myself...
Regards.

Hi,
I wonder if your "speakup_synth" line got messed up somehow. If you
still are using lilo, and if you can tell when you're at the boot-prompt,
not very easy on modern machines, you can hit control-x. That will bring
up a normal text lilo prompt. Just type: linux speakup_synth=<synth>. If
that works, you can use an editor to fix lilo.conf and rerun lilo. BTW,
did you make a bootdisk?
Any questions, call or write.

Well,
I went through the install process and chose the upgrade option. Everything
went well and I got what appears to be a good upgrade. There is only one
problem, that being that when I tried rebooting the system, I got no speech.
Anyone have any idea as to what might have happened?
