Does this mean that regular bash is no longer good for Speakup? I use
Slackware 7.1. Right now, I still have 2.2.16 kernel but will obviously
upgrade before attempting to install Speakup-0.10.

Its your bash that is the problem -- I would recomend linking bash to
bash2 if you have the bash2 rpm installed -- if not go get it and then
link bash to bash2 and your problem is solved.

I am using Slackware 7.1 too, and the bash that comes with it is version
2.4.0, and my speakup 0.10 and kernel 2.2.18 work just fine. No problems.

Too true. 0.10 will not work with 2.2.17 or below. Bill Acker supplied me
with the redhat rpm's for 2.2.18. If anyone is interested they can email me
and ill pass 'em along.

Try downloading the kernel source from Kernel.org.

how I tried under Red Hat using their Kernel source, and when I downloaded

Hi Jim: I am wondering if you are running redhat with a brain dead
bash? If this is the case, try running the script by prepending bash2
./install and see what happens.
