Hello all,
This is a rather long note. I am answering the questions that Luke and Tony
asked and restating my situation in obnoxious detail.
I have successfully installed both CD's, first, the alternate, then the live
CD on a desktop computer.
I used the same steps to download both images. I started at the ubuntu web
site, www.ubuntu.com, found a location to download from, downloaded the .iso
images, created the CD's under windows xp using cdrwin to write an iso image
to CD.
The alternate worked properly but my wife had to read everything. The
alternate CD gave me an option to install a text only version. That worked
but with no speech. I could type any commands and run any scripts.
Then I tried the live CD using the first option at the boot prompt to run it
before I installed it. This worked.
Then I decided to install it using the second option at the boot prompt. I
used the exact procedure that Tony described. Orca worked well enough for
me but it did not give me access to some of the more exotic things on the
system menu. I could enter the required password and then nothing would
happen.
I also did not see a way to get to a shell to type my own commands. I also
have a dectalk express connected to the only com port this computer has.
Would it be possible to get orca to use it? In reading between the lines, do
I infer correctly that for now, I will not be able to have speech, even if I
do manage to get to a place where I can type commands? Would it be enough
to find a way to install another kernel with speakup already installed in
it? If so, how would one do that?

Inside gnome, do the following:
1. Press alt+f2.
2. When the run dialogue comes up, type "gnome-terminal" without the
quotes, and hit enter.
This will get you a shell prompt, which will speak via orca. You can
of course get a real text console on tty1-6, but you'll need speakup,
or another text-console screen reader
to use that.

Not that I know of, but I could be wrong.

See above.

I still do upgrades/package installation under a text console with
speakup. Someone who does these things in gnome will have to help you there.

Hi again,
Thanks! That information has given me all I need for now. I can dig through
the help system and man pages and notes I have from a unix class from a few
years ago. That should be enough to keep me busy for a while.
Again, thanks much for the help.
Enjoy!
Bruce

Okay, so the install worked... that's good... I've also had the same
problem with 8.4 as well as earlier versions with accessing some of the
administrative tools on the system menu. As for shell commands, that I
can help ya there. To run a command do the key combo of alt-f2 which
will be pretty self explanitory. Type in gnome-terminal don't miss out
the dash, and you'll hear ubuntu at ubuntu. There's your command
promt, and with speech too. As for getting speech from the text
console, I mean the real one, you'll have to get a kernel package from
someone who's compiled a custom kernel, or roll your own containing
speakup, because the removed it from this version. Hth... must get
back to work now...

Hi all... For what it's worth, I've gotten the 8.4 release to work on
one computer, but not the other. The way I did it was first, when the
cd starts spinning, the first thing that comes up is a language dialog,
for which English is the default, just hit enter there, it spins a bit
more, then hit down arrow once, for the install, from there do the f5 3
enter enter and it should work, but on one of my computers the eee pc
to be exact, it dies right after the second enter, but on my desktop it
works just fine...
I'll be tickled if they include speakup eventually, which I guess they
will since it appearently will be in the latest Debian... so there it is...
Hth.

First, thanks to all for giving me the info to get through a couple of successful tries, putting different variations of ubuntu on the new machine I built. The last one was done using the live CD. By using the references in other notes on this list, I got it to come up speaking.
Second, Here are some questions. What will it take to get to a shell? What must I do to get speech from the shell, not just from the GUI?
Since I have installed this on a clean system, I would be willing to start over if that would be a better way to do things. I have no reason to be tied to any particular distro if another one would be easier to get working fully.
Thanks!

You're running Ubuntu 8.04 correct? All of the images for that I could
find, did not include the GUI installer, so using, for example, that Irish
fellow's Gnome with Orca tutorial, would not hack it for me, because
things do not work the same way with the desktop CD I was able to
download.
Which image did you use, and where did you get it?
Thanks
Luke
