In the case of virtualbox, you'd switch between full screen and a
minimized window by using hostkey+f. I think you could set a virtual
machine to start by default in full screen mode, but I haven't played
with that much. The hostkey is your right control key by default, but
that can be changed.

To do that, you press and release the hostkey. Same thing to go back
to the host system.

Yes, the gui won't talk in orca at this time. If using an rdp client
is an option for you, you might consider starting the guest with
vboxheadless, and interacting with the guest through virtualbox's
built-in rdp server.

I've used wineyes, and nvda on winxp guests in vbox with no problem.

All of that should work for you in a vbox guest.

I think virtualization could work, as long as you have modern hardware
with a fast enough cpu, enough ram, and a big enough hd.

you could try vboxgtk if you need a gui. how have you gotten sound forwarding to work with rdesktop? I've never managed that, I know there is an option for it, but never seen it work.

I've seen nvda work in qemu fine, that's all I've tried with windows to date.

all the apps should be fine you just have to setup networking. as for usb stuff I believe you'll have to tell vbox to pass them through to the guest, which I've never done.

I believe it should all work in kvm if you prefer that.

It'll probably take more configuration than dedocated hardware, but should work.

Interesting, I'll take a look at it. Maybe I'll actually consider
running vbox on a gnu/linux host too in that case.

Can't speak for rdesktop, I've only done rdp from within windows. I
mentioned a rdp client, because I assumed that rdesktop can do what
the windows rdp client can. If that's not the case as far as sound
goes, then that may not be an option.
> all the apps should be fine you just have to setup networking. as for usb stuff I believe you'll have to tell vbox to pass them through to the guest, which I've never done.
So far all the usb devices I tried passing through to a vbox guest
came through. I did see reports now and again from users saying that
this or that usb device doesn't get passed through, but those are rare
it seems.

It should as far as I know, but I don't have new enough hardware to
run kvm on, so can't vouch for it.

Hi.
I'm planning to use qemu now I think.
Because I've read a lot of how to set it up, and you can do almost
everything in text mode. Specifiyng sound options, create a system imageetc.
What is the best solution? qemu or virtualbox?
Also, do you know if there is a way of editing files in an iso-file?
I'm planning to do an unattended xp install, and need to put my winnt.sif
file on the cd.

HI,
if you don't want the gui you have to pass -curses to qemu / kvm.

Wel, it claims it can I think I saw a post on ubuntu list somewhere that implied people had it working. Its just that I've never personally seen it work. You could also use vbox to produce sound from the vm on the physical hardware if that's acceptable.

Hi.
Yeah, it is exactly what I want to do. Because I want to use my soundlbaster
audigy 2zs in my virtual machine too.
I thought that if I set this up, I can use that to play games without
needing to rebott into xp every time.

Hi.
What good guides are out there for using qemu and doing a virtual machine?
I've used one guide, and Windows just stucks somewhere in the isntallation.
So I have to kill qemu.
When trying to boot the image, I just get the bios, and the mssage "booting
from hard drive"

You can do all of this under virtualbox with vboxmanage too.

I stand to be corrected, but I think you'd need to remaster the iso to
do that. Why don't you just put your winnt.sif on a virtual floppy?

Ok, so how do I setup the windows xp client in either kvm or vbox on my debian (Vinux) system?
I really need to have both windows and linux available on my dell latitude d620 laptop. it is a 64-bit system with a 2.4ghz processor.
Any tips on getting things setup would be appreciated.

Hi,
Your hardware probably supports hard ware virtualization so you should be able to use kvm. YOu just need to install qemu-kvm, create a file that will be the windows machines hard drive and install windows in the vm. The only tricky issue is installing windows, you'll need to do a unatended install unless you can do it visually (thanks Microsoft).
btw if you are running stable I believe you would be well advised to install a 2.6.32 kernel from backports, note I've always been running testing on the relavent machine.

Thanks, I will need to look at the unattended method of installing xp. I know I have seen it in the past, but have to do a little research to figure it out again.

Hi.
Well, I updated qemu to the latest version.
then I got to the directory where I have my windows image, and ran:
qemu win.img -soundhw all -localtime -curses
And a surprice came, I heard the xp startup sound.
But a problem is after that, I can't seem to do anything in xp.
For example pressing start button and r to bring up the run box doesn't give
any result.
Because when typing a ltter, and pressing enter in tat box, you get a sound
telling you that there is no such thing there.
also, when pressing allt f4, I'm getting back to a linux login screen.
It shouldn't be like that.
I'hve tested with the -full-screen option.
What can be wrong now?

HI,
not really sure, windows might not like whats going on with the graphics card when you pass -curses? I'd suggust running qemu in x as a gui without the -curses option. When I ran kvm as a gui with windows server 2008 it worked fine.

Hi,
don't really know without seeing the error. My first gues would be that sdl a graphics and stuff library isn't installed, but not really sure, that should have been pulled in as a dependancy.
