Has anyone successfully gotten speakup working on the Pi?
I saw a thread on this list which seemed to indicate someone had, but with
audio problems.
Is there any tips or instructions out there?
If not, could people post what has sort of worked, I am wanting to work on
this as I am going to replace my Linux netbook I use with a Raspberry Pi.
Even if the quality is not the best, I am willing to work on it just for the
challenge.
Any information would be appreciated.

concerning audio output: I played with debian for py and it was
necessary to change output to analog manually

I have regular audio working on the Pi, so hopefully that will

A little less work.
I am currently using arch, and It don't think the speakup modules are there, but I will download the debian distro instead and see what it looks like.

I've tried working with it, playing MP3s and WAV files and such, and I
get a click in the console with it. It starts to click as if the audio
driver is initializing, and then after the sounds as if is shutting
itself down. I dunno, this is a common problem it seems with playing
sound in the console.

I think the new Pi board, the model b with 512MB of RAM instead of the
older 256 has fixed some of these issues. It's supposed to have
different things soldered into the board along the sound hardware paths,
with different capacitors and such. Don't know about that for sure though.

One of the issues I found building speakup modules into this thing is
that the /modules/KERNEL/build folder hasn't existed on the older
Raspbian images to be used, and until now, still has issues I think.
Going to try starting over with the latest Raspbian images though and
we'll see.

That is interesting... I have a 256m board and I can play sound and it
sounds ok... not CD quality, but certainly decent.
I am using the alsa drivers.

I had this problem (clicking on start and stop of playback) on py and
also on dreamplug. But i played with alsactl parameters and on
dreamplug it works now without clicks. I canot test it on py, i had it
only for a while.

Peter, I now have speakup working on the raspberry Pi.
If anyone wants the modules speakup.ko and speakup_soft.ko I will post
them on my web server so anyone can download them.
They are for the 3.2.27+ kernel used currently on rasbian.
The only thing I would like to know is what did you do with alsactl to
stop or reduce the clicking?
I cannot seem to get it to stop.
Any information would be appreciated.

Kelly,
I'd like to have the modules and any directions you care to share. I have
an early model PI. Like much of New Jersey, right now, I have no power at
home so won't get too it soon and my FTP server is offline. I just wanted
to let you know I'm interested.

Regards,
Jim

Peter, I now have speakup working on the raspberry Pi.
If anyone wants the modules speakup.ko and speakup_soft.ko I will post them
on my web server so anyone can download them.
They are for the 3.2.27+ kernel used currently on rasbian.
The only thing I would like to know is what did you do with alsactl to stop
or reduce the clicking?
I cannot seem to get it to stop.
Any information would be appreciated.

Where does one go to get a Raspberry Pi?
I went to the raspberry.org/ site and all I could find is t-shirts.
Thanks.

Jason,
Does this unit require soldering?
I noticed on the checkout page of accessories, there is a breadboard for
soldering.
I plan on getting the box for it.

To: Glenn, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.

Glenn,

No, there isn't any soldering needed. All of that extra stuff is to
expand functionality. If all you are looking for is a tiny portable
computer, you'll need th Pi, a 5V, 1000 Mah charger, and a case.

Kelly, thank you for that link, I couldn't remember where to get one in
the states. It was eithe relement 14, RS components, or allied, but the
one that delivered in the U.S. was talking 3 to 6 month on shipping last
I checked. But then again, it seems that everyone was complaining about
them.

Last note for now, about the audio clicking, and ordering a Pi. Make
sure that you order the newer one form here on out. It's pretty much the
same, with a couple things added into the audio wiring that is supposed
to get rid of that clicking. It's the one built in the U.K. and has 512
MB of RAM versus the original with only 256MB.

Well I just ordered it.
It will be a while though, because they are on back-order.
Previously, I ordered a GoogleTV box from Amazon which runs Android 4.0.
It was only 42 dollars.
I'm hoping I can get the Android screenreader going on it.
It is on back-order too.

I just got mine from a place called Allied.
I found it on the raspberrypi.org site by going to purchase, and then
selecting other, and then, north America, and then USA.

I have tried to build a kernel on a raspberry pi.
http://elinux.org/RPi_Kernel_Compilation was a good start
compiled overnight and boots fine.

So next step, how do i compile module speakup_soft?
do i need other modules?

make menuconfig was not too helpful, btw.

I would like to ask the raspbian people about including these modules.
But before i ask i want to know better what i'm talking about ;)

So any infos very welcome...

Robert

Is there a good install for the Raspberry Pi for SpeakUp and maybe Orca?
I just got my Raspberry Pi today.

I have a raspberry pi board, which I just got a week ago.

I was wondering if anyone has gotten speakup working on this board? I've been
trying so much to get it working without success..
I even attempted to compile the kernel (3.6), by including speakup from the git
source, but it resulted in compilation errors. I'm wondering if this is due to a
kernel mismatch (speakup not being designed for the 3.6 kernel). I really wish
the pi devs would just include this in their sources, but I guess the blind
isn't their priority.

Anyway. For now I'm just trying to get speakup_soft to work under arm and
somehow get speech. Orca won't speak either, so I'm not sure what's up, but I
would love to see any feedback on this.

Thanks,
Tomi

Hi Tomi,
I have one just sitting here, waiting for me to find a ROM with SpeakUp, or
at least one that I know work on it, so hopefully whomever knows will post
to the list.

Guys, I have compiled speakup for debian and arch on the pi.
I am in the process of moving to a new apartment just now, so I cannot
post my links, but I will write up a little howto and post the compiled
modules early next week.
I was going to do it earlier, but the holidays got me busy.
Thanks.

Hi Kelly,

That would be great! I've even tried getting this working under the arch build
without much luck. The advantage to the arch version is that updating packages
will actually upgrade the entire system, modules and all. :)

I would be curious to see if you or anyone has gotten around the Alsa popping
issue, though from what I'm reading on forums the audio pops happen do to the
video firmware. I also found an rpi-update utility which updates the kernel and
firmware for me through a script.

Thanks,

Tomi

Hi Kelly and others on this list,

I really, really hope this isn't too soon to re-post about this topic... I'm
just wondering if any progress has been made by anyone on making the Pi talk.
I've done a few experiments as per trying to reduce the pops made by the audio
device.

Also, why is this list so low traffic? It saddens me deeply! Has it moved to
another server?

Anyway. iIinstalled pulseaudio on the pi, thinking it would stop the crackles.
It really didn't because pulse goes through Alsa.
What's even weirder is that speech-dispacher can't seem to be able to speak
through spd-say, but espeak talks just through the espeak command. I don't know
why this is, but I suspect it's a hardware thing. I've reconfigured speech
dispatcher, without much luck. I even got orca to run in the standard desktop,
but all I hear is a loud pop when it starts (alt+F2 still works to open a run
dialog in the desktop environment, so after apt-get gnome-orca one can blindly
run it). I suspect that this is because orca obviously passes stuff to speech
dispacher, which can't talk.

All the best,
Tomi

What are you housing your Raspberry Pi in?
I bought a case for mine for a few bucks, but it is round, shaped like a
large smoke detector, and all I can think that I can do with the plugs is to
plug them in and run them through the hole in the middle of this smoke
detector.
I wonder if it would fit into a plastic cassette case?
An Altoids box would work if the tin did not have rounded corners.

The raspberrypi firmware now includes the speakup module.
They are only including the speakup_soft module, but that should be good
enough to start.
I expect arch and debian including it before long.
it is in the 3.6.11 tree.

Are you saying the Raspberry Pi foundation recently issued a firmware
update for fedora that includes the speakup modules? You can get fedora,
arch, and debian on a raspberry pi. If the speakup modules are not
included in debian and arch, that leaves fedora. When did this happen?

It's the software synth versus hardware synth. And thanks for the amazing heads up.

It's probably in the raspbian updates since that seems to be what they focus most on.

I am speaking of the reference firmware and modules available from
there git hub at
git://github.com/raspberrypi/linux.git
git://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware.git
This is the reference builds and I believe that the packagers use this as
a starting point for there packages.
Either way, even if they have not updated packages, you can download the
images and modules, install them and use them.
If there is interest I will write a little howto on what steps to take to
use this build.
I was going to repackage the kernels for speakup, but I suspect it will
become standard now so I will wait a little longer.
I was going to make a arch and debian build.

Hello Scott,

One of speakup's kernel modules. The one that drives software synth support.
