I got the daily build for Sept. 15 to boot with speech and successfully
installed AMD64 lenny. After reading f8.txt I tried the graphical install
which did work. I could not get the expertgui to work. So at the boot prompt
try
installgui speakup.synth=xxxxxx
The link for the daily builds is
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/

Errr, speakup can only read the text console, so don't use the gui
installer... Just use install speakup.synt=xxxx, i.e. at boot, type TAB,
then type speakup.synth=xxxxx and enter.

Well, all I can say is trying install time after time after time it would
not speak with the audapter. But installgui did. And although it didn't
speak absolutely everything it prompted me for language, and timezone blah
blah blah. The partitioner was very easy to use and it spoke everything. So
what does the statement in f8.txt mean when it says (graphical install only)
for speakup? I would like to know why it didn't work but I'm not going to
try the installer any more to find out. I just hope in the next
reincarnation the eyes will be more functional and I won't have to worry
about such things any more.

Uh?? What was speaking? The audapter, or your sound card through some
speech synthesis?

??!!?? In f8.txt, I can only read
Use Speakup speakup.synth=driver

and nothing about the graphical install.

In a word: I'm lost in what you are saying, that doesn't match what I'm
reading at all. Could you please explain exactly what you have done?
(which CD image you booted, what you typed, what produced speech, etc.)

The problem is that if everybody acts like that, the problem just
_won't_ be fixed...

I can't point you at the page except to warn you that this stuff is still
under testing and might potentially be unstable.
Regards, Kerry.

Obviously it was my audapter speaking. It would be wonderful if the
installer came up with software speech and I'm sure it's possible, all it
would take is someone with enough knowledge and time to do it which ain't me
unfortunately.
I did ask on the list if anyone had successfully booted from the daily build
around Sept. 15 and heard nothing.
So rather than crying in my beer about my broken system I reread the
instructions and tried again.
Here is my isolinux/f8.txt file for Sept. 15, 2008 daily build:
\x19

\x0f0fSPECIAL BOOT PARAMETERS - INSTALLATION SYSTEM\x0f07 \x0f09F8\x0f07

You can use the following boot parameters at the \x0f0fboot:\x0f07 prompt,

in combination with the boot method (see <\x0f09F3\x0f07>). These parameters

control how the installer works.

\x0f0f

RESULT PARAMETER\x0f07

Verbose debugging \x0f0fDEBCONF_DEBUG=5\x0f07

Debug boot sequence \x0f0fBOOT_DEBUG=2|3\x0f07

Disable framebuffer \x0f0ffb=false\x0f07

Don't start PCMCIA \x0f0fhw-detect/start_pcmcia=false\x0f07

Force static network config \x0f0fnetcfg/disable_dhcp=true\x0f07

Set keyboard map \x0f0fbootkbd=es\x0f07

Use Braille tty \x0f0fbrltty=driver,device,texttable\x0f07

Use Speakup (graphical install only) \x0f0fspeakup.synth=driver\x0f07

Use high contrast accessibility theme \x0f0ftheme=dark\x0f07

Select the kde or xfce desktops \x0f0fdesktop=kde\x0f07

For example:

boot: install fb=false

Press \x13F1\x14control and F then 1\x17 for the help index, or ENTER to

Hi Kitty. Did you install from disk or did you use the setup.exe to install
the basics first on windows? Couldn't get mine to install somehow. Cheers!

I installed from disk, my catbox machine doesn't have windows on it.

Ergl, ok now I see where things have gone. Grmbl, that line doesn't make
sense at all, I'll fix it.
