Greetings!
In a recent message, Samuel Thibault wrote, "s is not a boot parameter,
it's boot menu shortcut, which passes
speakup.synth=soft"
I decided on Friday that I'd like to try using Wheezy. I created a CD from
debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso.
at
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest
On booting, I had no trouble that I remember bringing up hardware
speech. In case I may need it for another computer, I tried using the
"s" shortcut to get software speech. It didn't work. Or, maybe it's
more precise to say I heard nothing, in case the problem is the muted
sound card hassle I've had before. Is that shortcut supposed to work
with the Wheezy image I used, or is there a specialized image for that use?
Thanks!
Al

As said before, it's supposed to work with all Wheezy images, except the
non-gtk netboot images.

Thanks, Samuel. That's what I suspected.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, can someone sum up what Wheezy
is, or send a link to an explanation?
Is it specifically for SpeakUp, or is it something else?
Thanks.

To: Glenn, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Wheezy is the code name for the next stable release of debian.
Like squeeze is the code name of the current stable debian 6.0.
Wheezy is still in development and more info can be found here: www.debian.org/releases/testing.

To: Glenn, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Wheezy is Debian testing. When you download the netinst iso image to make a talking system, if you press the lowercase s and then return when you
boot the disk and hear the drive stop turning, you will get software speech via speakup for a talking install of a talking system. I do not know what
gtk has to do with it as speakup does not use gtk.
The problem many people have been having is that when they press the lowercase and return, they, for some mysterious reason, are not getting the
requested software speech. The question is why.
This pretty much summarizes all this. I did not have any trouble, and I don't understand it either.
Glad to help.

I use the Debian Wheezy installer from:
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer
I do not go to the daily builds, as this last one worked perfectly.
1. I burned it to a cd
2. I booted it and waited to hear the drive stop turning
3. I pressed the s, that is, lowercase s, and waited for the installer script to start running
4. I followed all the perfectly straightforward steps in the installation script and now have this perfect CLI-only system I am working with as I
write this.
I want to thank all you nice folks over there at Debian accessibility for this accessible CLI script. What is it, a bash script? that's what I am
thinking it is.
You have helped me have a system that is orders of magnitude faster than it was with a graphical distribution on it, and you have helped me "say
goodbye to guiwood."
This is great!!
