Hi,
Just acquired an RN pentium 4ht which I am hoping to use with debian.
I have several net installs ranging from pre-lenny release to last week.
I find that I am not able to get speakup to come up talking on that
computer.
I have another machine where some of them some of the time work, I think
it may be a matter of timing.
Just wondering if any of you are using a pentium 4ht and whether there are
any known issues?
I have an appollo synth.
These are the steps I am taking:-
Insert the boot cd and waiting for the drive to stop spinning.
Arrow dow once and hit tab
then:
speakup.synth=apollo
I am told that the system goes on to boot and goes to the select country
prompt.
Wonder if hyperthreading has any impact or perhapse the com port is not
working or supported.
No idea of the hardware as I got it without an operating system.
Any comments welcome.
Wonder if it would give an error message at this stage if there is a hardware
issue?
Thanks
Keith Barrett

If the installer is using kernel 2.6.34 then speakup probably wouldn't start
but it is probably an older version any way. You can do alt-f1 or maybe its
alt-f2 to start busybox and press enter. You could mount a memory stick and
copy dmesg and look to see what's there on another machine. Or you could
boot with grml and if you get software speech you could use debootstrap.
Makes me tired just thinking of all the work that would be!

After you hit tab, try hitting your spacebar, and then typing
speakup.synth=... See if that helps. Other than that, you seem to be
doing everything correctly.

One more thing I forgot to mention is that it's probably not a good idea to
wait for the drive to stop spinning, because the boot loader most
likely has a default time out. So, by the time your cd-rom stops
spinning, the system may already have started to boot up, and probably
be done with that by the time the drive stops spinning. I'd suggest
that you wait 10-15 seconds after the drive starts spinning, and then
start hitting tab, and so on. Hth.

Hi,
Well, I got some eyes on the case and discovered that the serial port
was disabled in the bios.
Interestingly, grml still won't come up talking but debian lenny will,
which is not the same on another computer.
A couple of questions, in the bios, the serial port can be set to
disabled, enabled or auto. So, do I want auto or enabled?
Also, I am hoping to put debian testing back on so which of the recent
weekly builds or working with speakup?
Unless anyone knows that squeeze will be released in the next wook or
so, in which case I will hold on.
Thanks again for the help.

I'd recommend auto, unless you've got a specific reason for bios to
not assign irq/io ports to the serial port automatically.

Speakup is shipped along the graphical installer since Lenny, so any
images that includes the graphical installer should have it.

It's definitely not going to be released next week or so :)
(The freeze is expected in a few months, the actual release being a few
months after that).
