My grandma lets my brother and cousin use her computer, but thinks they're going in to adult porn sites when she's not around, etc etc. She wants me to set up something on linux so that I can watch all the sites, and email her a daily report of where her computer goes. I can do the daily report with cron and mailx, but i need a way to watch what sites she goes through, any ideas? You'd also need a copy of squid on the local box and tell the browsers to operate through squid. If these users do not cover their tracks just look through their web history to see where they went. If users unset proxy then they bypass your logging, this is possible to fix but is a bit involved. I find squidguard difficult to configure but it does work. There are also chastity-blacklist packages that will block a lot of adult sites. I go back to work this week and have no intention of providing any more information on these programs than I have in my previous post. I decided to make this clear before you wasted your time asking me any more questions. I have in fact used calamaris and sarg, and once squid is configured these programs for the most part work. This said however, I usually install this infrastructure for paying clients. As my wife is ill; I prioritize my time between working, and looking after her. This does not leave me with a lot of time to enter into in depth discussions on many topics on the speakup list. If you would prefer I will obstaine from providing any information at all on your inquiries; rather than beeing honest on the level of tech support I am willing to provide. If you feel this is a personal afront, I am sincerely sorry. there is no emotion involved in this decision and I have not allowed my personal opinions to affect this decision; it is purely a case of time management. Any other list participant is more than welcome to answer your further questions in as much detail as they see fit, however I will not be perpetuating the thread beyond this point. This is one of the advantages of open source and community resources, people can provide as much or as little support as they see fit. You can use squint to do the logging from the squid logs You can use iptables to force all machines through the proxy server. It is called transparent proxy. In short, you make your squid box the gateway needed by all machines on your internal network to go out to the world. Any requests to port 80 is grabbed and forwarded to the proxy server. Although you can block some sites using acls in squid, setting up squint justs show in a nice web page where every machine went and how long it staied on a particular site. If your gran can read that and the rest of the family knows that she can, they might refrane from visiting sites she would not like.
