No sound with espeakup-i386.iso

Samuel,

This is a 1.7 GHz P4 processor, with two sound cards: Intel 82801
(ICH4), and Creative Labs SB-Live! using emu10k1 driver. Booting with
the i386 espeakup iso from your web page (20-Sep-2010) gives me the
expected beep, but no audio after pressing enter. I waited a very long
time, tried both output jacks, double-checked the speaker volume, etc.,
but no audio. Substituting an archlinux talking installer CD and
pressing the restart button brought up the talking arch install just
fine.

Hi Chuck:

My soundcard is very close to yours, an Intel 82801 (ICH8), and I also 
got no sound as I reported earlier.

BTW, I've just tested the espeakup-amd64 image using my pendrive, with 
no luck as well.

I have e-mailed Samuel in private with the output of the amixer and 
lsmod commands from my machine. Lets wait....

Hi,

If I can be of help I'll do what I can, but right now there's no easy
way to get a file out of that box and onto this one where it might be
emailed. I was about to install arch on it, and thought I'd give the
debian installer with espeakup a shot first. So I'll hold off for a
while and see if I can be of help in some way.

But even if the Debian installer can be made to work with software
speech, I will still eventually put arch on this little box.

Hi Tyler,

No way! We're talking about an installer that is in an unknown state
after the initial beep and a single enter keypress.  Debian is not like
arch, where you could log into root without audio feedback very easily,
and have a prompt available. I have never seen a Debian installer that
could do that. After all, arch boots fine, it's Debian that fails to
talk, and hence is in an unknown state.

about with alsa's crazyness.

in its behavior. 

Both this one and the 20-Sep-2010 one do something a little surprising
though. Every other live CD I have ever used will lock the CD drive
while the system is running. The eject button is disabled. But with
both these espeakup images, I can eject the CD with the manual eject
button when enough time has elapsed to conclude it has failed. Not sure
if that's a clue, or unrelated to anything.

Hi Samuel,

Your latest image remains not speaking, however, it apparently no longer 
displays the "configure speech voices failed" message. After choosing 
locale, country and keyboard, it goes straight to the network settings, 
of course without speech.

It seems that the default alsa driver sound level is unfortunately 0.
William, we need to make something about this in espeakup. Testing it is
simple: on a standard linux system with speakup, set the alsa main
volume to zero, then start espeakup, no sound. The "espeak" volume is
only for its generated wave, it doesn't have any effect on the actual
alsa volume parameter...

The root shell will come up at the first screen of the installer I 
believe someone correct me on this.

It's unrelated: it's just that this image gets completely loaded into
RAM and thus the CD is not needed at all during installation.

Alsa mutes all volume channels by default.
The problem is that with high definition audio devices there is often a 
separate volume for Speakers, Headphone etc.
You need to raise the Master, PCM and whatever you are using in the way 
of headphones or speakers.
