Hi All,
Following some issues with my debian squeeze box, I now find that
I cannot boot the system.
I am getting a grub error 15.
Just wondering if there are any rescue discs with speakup?
If not, will go and get the latest testing install and start again.
However, would like to solve this for the future.
I know that there are live cd's for ubuntu but would rather work from
the command line.

Hi, I love the subject line. Image for Linux (IFL) comes with the IFNET.ISO, if I recall the name correctly, but it certainl is present with the linux version of image as well. If you download the package containing all three programmes, and install the image for linux files when you are asked if you'd like to, you can create the ISO or burn it to a cd. In the "help" folder under the linux files, is a file called speakup.txt. It tells you how to enable speakup. It's not bad, though Terabyte know that I wish they'd include a basic sound driver that has USB support at least, then we can have software speech included, as not many new systems have a serial port, and it's near impossible to get a system with ISA slots now. You'd burn the ISO to a cd, and well I guess you know the rest? Perhaps someone else on this list might like to correct me if I'm wrong: but you might like to try following the synthesizer keyword with a space, followed by speakup.ser=N where N is a number from 0 to however many ports you have. So, if you only have com1, you'd use 0, as in the unix world, all ports start at 0. Until configuration files are manually updated to include SpeakUP, it can be started from the boot loader with a simple text command: speakup.synth=<synthesizer driver> Usually the synthesizer driver is a 4 character name like "ltlk" or "soft", which loads in support for the LiteTalk hardware synthesizer, or the software synthesizer, respectively. The linux CD will usually have instructions for booting Linux with SpeakUP support in the documentation directory, which may be viewed with any working computer system. Booting the software synthesizer is a little bit more involved. Not only do you have to load the driver, you also have to start a software synthesis engine after logging in. This can all be automated for the future, though. Some distributions (distros) contain SpeakUP support, and some do not. Some of the more popular linux flavors include GRML vinux, Debian, and Ubuntu to name a few. Their CD images can be downloaded from their websites and burned to CD. Once that's accomplished, you can put the CD in the drive, read the usual slew of help textfiles on how to boot and or install the system, and go from there. No idea, A friend worked it out by reading the screen for me and seeing what keys did what. Thanks, Kerry, talking now. Thrown up some interesting things, though, think I will need to do a new install. A bit of history in case anyone is interested. Been using debian testing for some time and I noticed that although some newer kernels had been downloaded, it was still booting one from January. The newer ones were listed in the grub menu.lst. After lots of googling, I upgraded to grub pc and at that point it would not boot any more. Using the rescue cd, I found that the hard disk is sda1 and swop is sda5. However, in the menu list they are listed as hda0. Also, in /etc/fstab it says that the system was installed on hda1. So, I am thinking that something has gone fairly badly wrong with the system. I was able to get the sfuff my my home directory so, unless anyone has any ideas, I will get the latest debian testing and start again. It has certainly reminded me howto use mount and umount but could have made better use of the last 3 days. Sorry for the ramble and thanks for the help. Incidently, I did change the drives in the menu.lst to sda1 but still got error 15. I was abke to get software speech by modprobing speakup_soft and then starting the espeak connector -- I think espeakup is its name and that made software speech work, but hardware speech was easier. True they boot into ubuntu, but if you press ctrl+shift+f1, you will open a terminal session with speakup running in it. http://vinux.org.uk is the main page, and if you go to the downloads page, there are a lot of choices.
