I don't have much of an answer, but here's a pointer.
There was a long thread about this topic on the blinux list in December
of 2009.  You might want to check the archives.

The result was: emacs-chess, which is an emacs mode for playing chess,
and was partly developed by Mario Lang, and as such is indeed
accessible.

I've found gnuchess fully accessible. My proviso is that I have my
tactile chess set out so that I can make each move there as the game
progresses. You can unwind moves in gnuchess. You can also get an ASCII
screen print of what pieces are where.

In short, I've not seen a reason to look further.

I've not been current with email, but here's another answer and this 
program has been around for awhile.  It's called gnuchess and is available 
on debian as a package and is also available in the fedora archives as 
well.  I had gnuchess working under dos before I ever installed Linux for 
the first time and found the same interface in the Linux version when I 
installed that package some years ago.

Yes, I knew about it but didn't even mention it as its interface is not
really convenient.
