Hi
This would have everything to do with it. Speakup is not broken, this is
true. However, you need to access kernel modules, so you need the new
speakup.i disk. Exactly what commands are you using to get the floppy drive?
Slackware 8.0 is a more do-it-yourself distro, so it's not all set up for
you, try this to access the floppy disk:
mkdir /mnt/fd0
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0
Note that jjust mount /mnt/floppy will *not* work without some setup. But
one thing at a time. ONce you've got the floppy drive mounted, copy the
kernel as follows:
cp /mnt/fd0/vmlinuz /
/sbin/lilo
Reboot the system and login as root again, and run depmod -a to get the
module dependencies in order, and try running pppsetup again.
Slackware also has the autoloader, it's just not preconfigured for you. As
for building a kernel, you don't have to but you might want to sometime in
the future.

Hello, list. As suggested by a couple of you I am trying out the Slackware 8
distribution as apposed to the distributions I had been working with. Thus
far I like it, but are having many new user problems.
First, problem is dealing with PPP.The directions, and the default option
was to use the kernel from the boot disk, and so I used it.
Now however my hardware is not working at all. I ran pppsetup, and when I
tried to run pppd it said the kernel doesn't have ppp support.
Also I can't seam to find sndconfig. I was a Red Hat user before so forgive
my ignorance on how about getting sound going.
If anyone on the list would be kind enough to walk me step by step through
getting ppp going, getting sound going, a network up and running and really
teaching me the guidelines for Linux I would appreciate it.
Although having speakup built into Slackware is pretty awesome. I'm not
having problems with speakup, but Slackware at the moment is dead, and I can
not do much with it.
I have a feeling the directions in directing me to use the speakup.i kernel
was wrong, because it doesn't seam like I've got a single module working.
I'm also use to Red Hat's audomodule loader so I don't really know about
manually loading a module myself.
Do I have to build a kernel, or what? I thought you just installed this and
it worked with ppp, soundcards, and such out of the box.
Please, help me with this, and walk me through it. I'm actually going to
give Linux a real try, but until I can actually get it working I can not do
much with it.

Hi there.
The boot disk used in slackware 8.0 is broken for speakup.
Think there has been an updated version posted on the speakup ftp site.

Yes this is true.
Bad kernel modules I suspect.

Hi thomas:

I have put up what I hope are corrected boot disks for Slackware. The url
for these disks is:

ftp://ftp.braille.uwo.ca/pub/speakup/disks/slackware/slackware-8.0/bootdsks.144

I have installed with the speakup.s image and PPP is working ok. I
haven't tried to get sound working on this installation, but, I had to get
alsa and compile and config it myself. There are others on the list with
a lot more experience with sound than I have. I had to get some help the
first time I did it. I'll have to wait until I get more time before I
tackle it again.

But, at any rate, if you use the kernel from the speakup.s image on the
speakup ftp site, PPP should work. The root disk on the slackware distro
is fine--just the boot disk. I hope this is of some help.

Hi again:

Almost forgot. If you're not sure what the files are in the directory I
mentioned before, see the "README.TXT" file one level up. The url for the
file is:

ftp://ftp.braille.uwo.ca/pub/speakup/disks/slackware/slackware-8.0/README.TXT

Hope this helps.

The problem with the Speakup boot disk is that it uses a kernel with
multiprocessor support and the other kernels are single processor. The
modules that install with Slackware assume the single processor kernels.
If you don't want to compile a new kernel, the easiest way is to copy the
modules from the contrib CD in the directory modules/2.2.19-smp over the
existing /lib/modules/2.2.19 ones. That's what I did and then I compiled
myself a custom kernel. Hope this helps.

Hi Thomas,

For both pppd and sound to work, you need to load the respective kernel modules first.
Look at and approperately edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules
. Hth.

Are you logged in as root for all of this?
If not, then login as the su as opposed to normal user.
Once you get things straight as root, you can go from there to normal user setup.

he'd put some boot images for slackware 8.0 on the speakup ftp site as the
images supplied with slackware 8.0 were broken.

Hi, list. I just downloaded the new speakup.i image from the Speakup ftp
site, and installed the kernel to my Slackware 8 partition.
My floppy and cdrom are now working fine. However, I am still not getting
ppp nor is my built in zip drive working.
The ppp problem is that I get a kernel error stating that I do not have ppp
kernel support. I believe I have the proper modules loading in rc.modules,
but still no ppp.
My zip drive error is that it keeps telling INVALAD FILE TYPE> I typically
have used type vfat, and it worked fine, but since installing Slackware it
won't use vfat. Thus it won't mount the zip drive which has files on it I
need to backup from the Red Hat installation which I formated to make space
for Slackware.
Ok, now if someone can help me with these problems any help is welcome. Also
I still want to get sound, and perhaps some advice on building a 2.2.19
kernel designed for my main computer.
Does Speakup need any cvs patches to run on 2.2.19, or will the .10-a
version work fine?

Do you have the kernel source? Why don't you just compile the kernel and
include PPP support?

Hi Thomas,

Let's assume that your zip drive is /dev/hdb.
To mount the filesystem on it, do:
"mount /dev/hdb4 -t vfat /mnt"
. Substitute your mount point for /mnt of course.
Iomega likes to format there disks as the 4th partition for some reason.
As for your ppp problem, do "lsmod".
You will get a list of currently installed modules, if ppp is not one of them,
you'll need to load it by hand with "modprobe ppp".
If this doesn't work from /etc/rc.d/rc.modules (which I've seen with certain modules before), then
add the modprobe command above to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local so that it runs
every time you boot for sure.
What kind of sound card do you have, and did you find support for it
in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules?
Yes, speakup 0.10a works with 2.2.19 with no patches.
Hth.
Greg

Hi, list. Ok, I've got just about everything working now all except ppp.
That must be still broken so I guess I'll try and build my own kernel here.
I've got my network working, soundcard going, cdrom, and zip going. Yet ppp
is giving me errors.
However, do I need the cvs packages to patch the 2.2.19 kernel source, or
will the .10-a stuff work?
Thanks.

Hi Greg:

I'm not sure what's going on with Thomas's system. However, when I used
the modified boot disk on the Speakup ftp site, I didn't have to do
anything but run pppsetup to get ppp working. I haven't tackled ALSA yet,
but, I know I'll need to either load the proper modules or compile a kernel
with sound support. I'm not worried about this since I've done it
before. I need to wait until I have more time free, though.

Hi there. I've found that if I really want to get out of trouble the most
painless way of doing things is to just reformat and start from
scratch. In my case, I have all my configuration files backed up on a
200Mb fat32 partition on this drive I use for linux so if I run into
trouble I can just restore my settings soon after an install.
just out of interest, it took me less than 2 hours about a week aago to
reformat and reinstall slackware 7.1.
Try doing that with windows. I garentee you can't.

I thought that ppp should be in the kernel already, but I wasn't entirely sure.
In that case, I don't know what the problem could be either.

What if you have an hd crash?
Then all your config files and your distro are gone.

Hi Thomas.

If you want to use the kernel 2.2.19, you don't need a
cvs package. But you must to download and uncompress
speakup-0.10a in your /usr/src directory, before to
compile the kernel.
