hi all,
sorry for the cross posting, but i need as good as answer as there
is, as this is a pretty important decision. i am currently using
speakup with zipslack, and find it good, since the zipspeak
distribution is the only one where you don't need to compile source
for the speech program because mr campbell has already done
that. anyway, i am really looking at the long term and in october i
will be going to university to read computer science and will be
required to use many of the laboratory computers, many running
linux. ok, the university aren't going to be kene on my patching
their kernel so that when my synth isn't connected the computer
will crash! even if it doesn't crash speakup may cause trouble with
other user's as they would still have to take heed of the speakup
hotkeys. is there a solution to this problem? wel, the first i guessis
to ask whether it wuld be possible to have my own boot disk, then
log onto the university network with speech? secondly, i'll probably
end up writing my own non kernel based screen reader! please,
anyone give advice since i believe many of you gang must be at uni
yourselves since many email addresses imply this.
thanks, regards, saqib shaikh

My suggestion would be that you make and use your own boot disk. That
way, when you're done with the work station, all you need do is reboot it
in the way that your university's computing department has set up the work
station. I would ask the university what device support they've compiled
into heir kernels (modules etc), so your boot disk kernel matches the
default kernel in all respects, with the addition of Speakup. I'm sure
they will cooperate! For added portibility, you should compile Speakup
with support for an outboard synthesizer like the Doubletalk LT, so you
can use any available work station.
Good Luck,
Dave

Using a speak-up boot disk should be a workable solution. Also, keep in
mind that a non-kernel-based screen reader such as yasr requires access to
the tts device such as the serial or parallel port, and you would probably
not have such access by default, but hopefully the lab administrator could
give it to you if you explained your situation.
I have always avoided needing to log into lab machines directly, which
probably would have been impossible anyway since the machines in the Unix
labs (with the exception of some machines in the ECE department) are
X-terminals used to log into a server. I have a notebook and was able to
get the Network Operations people to install an extra network drop in the
labs that I needed to be in so that I could connect my laptop and use it
to log into a server. So you may be able to do this if you have a
notebook. In any case, most of the cs classes that I've taken haven't had
labs; only a few of the introductory classes did.
Hope this helps.

If you're an oister, then don't let your perl get away from you.

I actually just have a laptop with linux on it and a dhcp hook up to
school. This means you would have to get the system admins to understand
that your not a security risk and give you the rights to hook up with dhcp
but it works rather well for me.
