Hi all.
Can someone who knows the answer please explain what I need to do if I
want the capslock key to just be a normal capslock key on a machine
running speakup? Thanks.

I would guess that you tap it twice quickly.
HTH.

Hi Greg,
You can toggle the caps-lock key by holding down the shift-key and pressing the caps-lock key.
Or, if you want to permanently alter it's function you can get into the speakup keymap and change it, but that's more involved and probably not what you're looking for.

Terri,
this actually is what I'm looking for. I remember the keymap used to
be in keymap.map in the kernel source. I see a file called keymap in
/sys/accessibility/speakup, so I'm guessing that's where it resides
these days. However, I'm at a loss as to how to adjust it. I know
naturally I'd copy it somewhere permanent, edit it, echo it back to
/sys/accessibility/speakup/keymap. It's the what do I edit part that
has me stumped. Thanks.

Hi Greg,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner...
If you want to alter the keymap permanently, it is a bigger challenge. You'll have to edit the keymap first, then recompile the kernel with the speakup patches applied, including the modified keymap. Or, if you're using speakup as a module, just recompile the module with the modified keymap. The keymap contains the numeric keycodes for every key on your keyboard.
It's been a few years since I worked on it, so I would have to spend some time in getting up to speed on it again. I think some things have been changed since then too, so it's an interesting endeavor.
Have fun!
