Looking for accessible web host and domain registration

Hi all,

The subject summarizes my question.  Is there such a thing as a web host or
domain registrar which actually works with Lynx or some other text browser?
 My current domain registrar isn't particularly easy to use even with
Firefox and I thought it would be nice to actually be able to manage my
domains from the console.  I don't suppose there is such a thing as command
line domain registration and web hosting?  I know about Amazon, but I am
looking for something that just works without a lot of hassle.  Amazon is a
bit bigger than I like and has a complicated pricing structure.  What do you
use for your web hosting and domain registrations?  Yes, I can set up my own
server from scratch, but again, that's a lot of effort to go through just
for a basic web hosting account.  I would be interested in your thoughts on

I don't know anything about Lynks but have you looked in to hostgator
or namecheap? Hostgator seems to be very good

Actually, I looked at namecheap and it looked just as cluttered and
confusing as any of the rest.  What's better about hostgator?  Basically, I
just want to enter a domain name and register it without lots of
advertisements, clutter, etc.  Do they offer that?  Again, doing it from the
console and/or command line would be nice.

dyndns.org may work with your firefox, I doubt it will work with lyns,
it used to work pretty well, but no more.

Yes, they look pretty good, but they don't offer web hosting.  Besides, $18
per year for a .com is expensive.  Thanks.  So far, they look the best for
domain registration.  Also, they don't post their prices until you actually
search for a domain.

Does Ultra Domains support IPv6? That's a must have for me.

Their interface does look very clean, which is refreshing.

I've been using gandi.net for domains for years. It works with lynx,
though it certainly isn't clean and uncluttered like Ultra Domains.

At the moment Gandi is offering .com domains for $5 USD.

PS: I host my own domains.

I don't know about text based browsing support, but I use Hover for my 
domain names. I haven't had to use the control pannel in a while, but 
the last time I did it was not cluttered and plenty easy to use. IN 
fact, that's what caused me to switch to hover in the first place. I 
liked the fact I didn't have to ferret around on a web site to find the 
options I needed. I also liked the fact they offered private 
registrations at no additional cost.

speaking only for myself,  the answer is yes.
I do not host my domains and register them with the same service.  still 
all of the ones I use   work well with lynx, and in the hosting cases all 
of them provide shell based structures that include  updated editions of 
lynx, and links.  Plus in one case text compiled editions of elinks.

rates are fine, and I can just call to renew, toll free,  updating 
information with lynx  or links as required.

say creating mailboxes and the like all with lynx, links in some cases.
Dreamhost also provides a *ton* of tools  I have not even tried yet for 
sites hosted with them.

Hi,

Ah, that's most interesting.  How did you ever manage to use the DreamHost
panel?  It requires Javascript and isn't that easy to use even with
Firefox.  I know because I just left them.  Every month they were adding
something new and I felt they lost track of just plain old web hosting.  I
don't really care about their cloud services.  I did like the shell
account, but the version of Ubuntu was rather old.  I didn't like their
VPS because it was limited in what you could actually do with it.  They
wouldn't let me upgrade Apache, the kernel, etc because they said it would
break the VPS which was stuck on Debian Lenny at the time, long after Etch
had been released.  Granted, I didn't try their panel with Lynx, but I
can't imagine it would work without Javascript.  I've never heard of the
domain registrar before, so I'll go take a look.  Thanks very much for the
information.  I knew about Shellworld, but they are more of a shell
account provider and not really a web host from what I gathered.  Besides,
they're a bit expensive if I recall correctly.  This information has been
most helpful and interesting.

Hi again,
Not sure when you officially left, the shell upgrade for ubintu is well 
reasonably recent, but their edition of lynx is older than say the one from 
a couple of months back we have at shellworld.
I am really picky about that control panel, so indeed use lynx, or more 
often than not links which has a tad of scripting support.
It does work for me though, or at least for the features I need.
Now they might have insured my account worked, Dreamhost provides hosting 
to nonprofit organizations.  that is  the domain   or the domains they 
host for me.  I told them up front that not providing a w3c compliant door 
with low graphics options was against the law and so they fixed the door 
for me.
I do agree  about  too much stuff on the buffet so to speak smiles.  but 
it works  in lynx for me.  still my editions of lynx tend to be more 
current than the ones in distributions, and I use it too here at 
shellworld.
As for their hosting, yes they do that as well as serving as a regular isp.
they host my personal site, along with my having a regular shellworld 
account.
Speaking only for myself, its worth the $10 or $15 or so for the hosting 
with all the updated open source tools I have and the unlimited space i 
require.
But that is just me smiles.

I've used namecheap, godaddy, and namesecure. They are all about the 
same with respect to accessibility. They all have some glitches but once 
you are familiar with the tricks, you can use them. I think namecheap is 
the best value because it provides extra services, like dynamic dns, and 
charges less. I have not tried any of them with lynks. I've tried them 
with firefox and safari.

My domain is hosted by http://www.gandi.net/

My DNS records, Internet telephony system, mail server and Web server are all
on a virtual machine hosted by http://www.linode.com/ which offers a choice of
Linux distribution. In addition to having root access to the virtual machine
over ssh, you can manage it over an ssh connection, for example to reboot it,
check its status, access the console when networking isn't functional, etc.

This works very well and fits within my budget, but it all depends on how much
you'll use it and whether it's worth the cost - economic rationality and
utility has its place sometimes.

Yes, I know about dedicated and virtual servers.  I'm now with Hetzner and
they so far have the best deal and offer the most features.
<http://www.hetzner.com/>  I found them cheaper than anyone else and I
looked at all of the major server companies I could find.  Their robot
isn't accessible at all in a text browser but works fine in Firefox.  If
you don't mind a bit of programming, their robot has an API which of
course can be accessed with curl from the command line.  I was
specifically asking about web hosts because most people don't want or need
a full server solution and it's a pain to set up a server just for basic
web sites and email.

With that said, I would be very interested in your telephony setup.  I've
been thinking about setting up Asterisk, but I have no experience with it
and I'm worried about bandwidth costs.  Hetzner gives at least 20 TB per
server, but with the other sites already on the server, I don't want to go
over my bandwidth limit.  How much bandwidth do you use in VoIP calls per
month?  You can write off list if you want.

I haven't used enough bandwidth to be at all concerned. With modern codecs,
you can have high quality telephony without consuming high bandwidth.

I'm running FreeSWITCH: http://www.freeswitch.org/ (see their Wiki for
extensive documentation).

There are also service providers who will connect your telephony system to the
public switched telephone network at good prices by providing you with a phone
number.

I haven't used it, but on archlinux there's a package called ddclient 
that may help.  The documentation for that package has an exhaustive 
list of domain registrars in it.  The ddclient package is run on command 
line too.

Where in the documentation?  It sure isn't in the README file.  The package
itself seems to be PERL scripts.  I admit I didn't look at every file, but I
didn't see such a list.  I saw a list of dynamic DNS providers in the README.
