The drivers are available, but the debian kernel is messed up in such a way that it won't use those sata drivers and detect the drive. For the record, I have CK804 nvidia equipment in the machine that has the sata drive. I did find archlinux had no problem finding and handling the sata drive though. This is on an amd athelon k8 machine with a gig of memory. I have not been able to get slackware64-13.37 to install on that machine either with speakup.synth=ltlk at boot up or with modprobe speakup_ltlk after initial login. I have no idea why since iso's I download pass both gpgv and md5sum tests. Now this one will be strange, it was for me. I tried the last version of grmlmonster I could find and it wanted more sata disk than was in the machine at the time. Ok, Compaq CQ-61, single-core AMD Cempron, unknown make of audio hardware, atheros wireless equipment, 250-gb hard disk, using the latest Debian installer from http://www.debian.org/devel/ and all is well that ends well, and I am completely satisfied with it. The installer itself worked like a dream with speakup standing by me at every turn. After installation, the system came right up talking and I haven't had a lick of trouble out of it yet. My computer, named after the famous starship Enterprise has just been in space dock for a refit and is running like a dream. If there is any specific information you can give me about these unexplained failures you have been experiencing, I will be glad to look into them and help you. Glad to help. I have been hunting Linux talent for years without success here locally. I have both an IBM 600 duo core system, my choice for this experiment, I know more about it lol. and a custom built Linux box, with nothing on it whatsoever, which may be less trouble but less fun. I have a friend burning the cd images for me, a functional dec-talk express and am gain to go at it, with all the positive reports feeding my hope that after all the years of being a reader I may be a users too. The talking installer works well. I had no problem with the sound or anything like that. I just hit the lowercase s at the start, pressed return and all went well. However, I did have to install more than I thought as there is no good way to do my kind of web browsing with no desktop environment. I was hoping there was. Both debian and Vinux, I have had experience with and I have found them both rather stable and either should be suitable for your work. I am running Vinux right here, and I would hope that you can find the right one for you. The idea of a talking computer for no more cost than that of the hardware has been adream of many for many years. I am glad that, with linux, either Debian or Vinux, it is possible to have one.
