Hi all,
I am looking for a console-based cdplayer that will work well with speakup/brltty. I am running debian lenny 5.0.3, I believe.
Any suggestions appreciated.

I use cdcd. You have to type 'play' out to play a cd, and the
cd will continue to play if you 'quit' the program before typing 'stop',
but except for Debian deleting the /etc/cdrom symlink all the time, it
works fine.

I installed cdcd last night, and tried to play a cd with the following command:
$ cdcd --device=/dev/cdrom play 2
I get an error saying it cannot find the cddb cgi, or something similar and the cd doesn't play.

Strange that it didn't play. 1) The cddb.cgi is cdcd looking up
the disk on the web to see what it is. 2) Are you sure there is a valid
/dev/cdrom symlink to point to, or did Debian delete it? Try an 'ls
/dev/cdrom*' to be sure. HTH,
Michael

Hey Michael,
I'm not sure this is from Debian deleting the /dev/cdrom link, because
I just checked and don't have one either. What I do have is
/dev/cdrom1. I'm running gentoo.
So something did change, but I don't know that Debian changed it.

Well, just assume Debian changed it. <grins> Look for my OT cddb
server info message posted above for what I found about the cddb server
URL.

Cdcd wil only play things if there is an analog
cable from the cd to the sound card -- its in an underlying librarywhich
is quite old.

Your life is like a penny. You're going to lose it. The question is:
How do
you spend it?

I think I need to update my cddb url, but can't figure out the syntax. Hopefully someone can give a little help.
When I type:
Cddb <return>
Then site <return>
Then <display>
I see
1 freedb.org http://www.freedb.org:80/cgi-bin/cddb.cgi,
But according to thte freedb website it should be:
http://freedb.freedb.org
however when I try to move the server to the new url I get errors. Can't figure out the syntax.

Yeah, I have the same problem. I dunno perl, but the 'ripit'
package grabs the correct information to rip CDs., and label them when
ripping them to mp3s (via the 'lame' package from Debian Unofficial). I
dunno the URL for freebsd...
