Hi all,
In our area we are not served by Verizon Fi-OS, only by their standard
DSL service. I would appreciate any advice or reports of experience
concerning what accessibility issues I might face switching to such an
internet service.
First, what equipment will they want me to use? Will it be accessible
from a command line Linux environment? Right now edbrowse does a nice
job with my WRT54G router. What can I expect from Verizon equipment?
Any other tips or suggestions will be appreciated, I haven't yet
contacted them, but would like to do so fairly soon. Economics is the
issue here, since Verizon DSL is about 40% of the cost of our present
cable service.

I would not use their router if they use one on dsl, but connect your
Linux box to their DSL modem and use it directly -- their install
needs Windows, but you don't really need it. Officially they don't
support Linux, but if you know what you are doing, it works. It uses
pppoe if I remember correctly .

Chuck,
I'm running verizon here with no problems. I bought a dsl modem from
them and connect my router to it. I put it in bridge mode so the the
pppoe runs on the modem and the router connects to the modem the same as
your cable connection.
Configuring the modem is a bit tricky because the pages use javascript.
There are some pages on the net which show you how to do it. Because of
the javascript you'll need a browser that supports javascript (mozilla
or ie) and possibly some sighted assistance. Verizon also sells a
combination modem/router which is a good option if you don't have a
router.
LOL

Thanks, guys,
John and Chris suggested two strategies, and a little googling
satisfied me that it is a feasible thing to pursue.
A few years ago I briefly had DSL using the strategy John suggested,
but at the moment I need to provide internet access to more than one
machine, so Chris's plan seems the way to go, particularly since I
already have an independent router that is accessible.
Thanks again for your responses.
