Hello,
I'm trying to set up a linux system here at school at my lab station, and am using a cross over.
I installed linux and all that, but when I use ifconfig, it says that eth0 wasn't recognized.
I've tried:
inserting a NIC card in to the pci slot and using that.
I also tried the onboard card, and it's not recognizing.
Any ideas on how to get it to recognize? I've never had this problem before.

Doesn't your school have an I/T department for doing that kind of
stuff, or are they for windows only, or is setting up a gnu/linux
system part of a course you're taking?

What does dmesg say, if anything? Does linux have support for the
card(s) you're trying to use, and if so, then is that support
configured into your running kernel, either as modules, or built-in?

hello,
I installed it on debian.
I tried using the hw card that I've used on all my comps from home, and it
still doesn't recognize it.
I'm in i/t. I'm using it for networking because wireshark is not accessible.

Ok. There is a udev rule in debian that renames some cards from eth0
to eth1. So, with 1 card in the system, try configuring eth1 instead
of eth0.

Hi tyler,
You might look at the basics (if you haven't already)... That is, look at the output of 'lspci'. All pci devices in the system will be listed there. Look for one that says something about 'net'. It should be listed there. If not, either it's not a pci device, or it isn't being recognized by your system (that isn't likely).
If it is listed by lspci, then you just need to install the proper driver, usually by modprobing the appropriate module. The udev rules simply allow "renaming" of the interface. You can worry about that later, if you want to, after establishing that the device/interface is functioning correctly.
HTH,

Is the card recognised as another interface? try just running ifconfig
and seeing what output you get. I had a couple of systems at work
that for some reason saw the onboard ethernet as eth2, even though
there were no eth0 or eth1.

Hi. I have encountered this as well on servers that I have worked on. Ifconfig
- -a, or ip link show should give you a sense of what interfaces are being
recognized. Hth.

hello,
I am replying to the first post in response I think, as that's the top of
the thread for me.
Anyway, it was udev, and I just replaced it with hotplug.
More and more things seem to be breaiking with debian lately, now bash
requires udev for completion if you upgrade bash, but udev isn't a required
package.
There's a ln hack you can use, but it seems like packages aren't coming with
the proper dependencies.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
I personally didn't mind udev--until it decided to rename nic interfaces,
anyway. That broke a lot of scripts from startup and others.

You might experience trouble eventually from obliterating udev, it seems to
be becoming more and more ingrained and it solves a lot of problems as well
as creating some interesting situations.
I think hotplug is deprecated not sure.
There is a good reason for the eth0 funnies, both why interfaces are renamed
and why they are locked in place.
On a normal box you don't usually want a firewire interface showing up as
eth0, as the average user doesn't want to network with firewire.
Also on a normal box when you boot the kernel without the udev magic
multiple ethernet interfaces are detected in the order the kernel finds
them. This means if you add a second card, eth0 can become eth1 and visa
versa.
With udev, the mac address of eth0 is stored in the persistant rules file
and eth0 stays eth0 when you add a card.
this can cause problems if you change the card in a box, eth0 will become
eth1, then if you change to a 3rd card it becomes eth2.
You can fix this by removing the lines from
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistant-net-generator-rules
not sure if I spelt that properly.
This is important if you are creating virtual machines with Debian Ubuntu or
Gentoo and you clone the machine. When the Mac of the nic changes udev
assigns another interface name to the card.
It is easy enough to remove the lines from the generator file and reboot the
machine to get eth0 back.
I find that ifconfig -a is a good way to find out what udev has done to your
interfaces.
Regards, Kerry.

Hotplug is deprecated as far as I know, and its successor is udev. So,
I would advise against going to hotplug. Also, is there a specific
reason why the interface had to be called eth0, couldn't you just have
configured it as whatever udev chose to call it?

hello,
sounds like it may help in the future, though my only networking card,
(wireless or otherwise) is just ethernet, so not sure why it got renamed.

I had this problem when I installed Debian with speakup in the kernel. The
NForce driver got an invalid MAC address from the card and then assigned a
random one so every reboot would come up with another eth number for the
card. Problem went away when I compiled a newer kernel.

Debian should do something similar with naming hard disks and
serial and parallel ports. Make it *really* look and act like Windows.

Oh God forbid! why should it look and act like windows? Linux works
fine the way it does now. The udev stuff makes it more automated in
the way windows users are used to but beyond that, leave it alone; it
works! and it works good.

If you knew how much I despise Microsoft, you would've seen the
sarcasm. <grins>
