Hello,
If you all remember, I was having issues with mail, I left it for a while
and decided to return to playing with it.
According to my logs, some servers block dynamic IP addresses, and I was
refered to a site that confirmed as much.
On this site I was also told that:
a, dynamic IP addresses were blocked from sending mail,
b, I had to use the Qwest smtp server.
So, I called up tech support and actually for once in my life found someone
who sounded like they new what they were talking about.
We covered the problems with my modem, and got to briding the modem and
using my linxsys which I want to put open wrt on anyway as the real router,
which I am going to end up doing sometime when I have the time to play with
it.
Then he told me that qwest didn't supply smtp to "home" customers,
(shocking!), and my only bet was a static IP.
So, I obtained the static IP, and lots of things (including mail) are now in
working order.
Thanks,
Tyler Littlefield

Hi. In addition to having the static IP, if you have your own domain,
Qwest will even do a reverse dns for your static IP. When I was in
Denver, I did this with them and it was fantabulous.

something I find extremely odd:
I am using smtp for my moo; their smtp and pop accounts are both
pop.bla.qwest.com (where bla==the zone).

Yeah, I was going to say that qwest not providing smtp to residential
customers sounded extremely odd. I've been on static IP with them
since the beginning, so I can't definitely say they're wrong, but from
what I saw when browsing their site, it sure looked like they provide
smtp and pop3 to their customers, residential, or not. Besides, I've
never heard of a residential ISP before that didn't provide full
e-mail to their customers. My opinion is that the tech just told you
that because they could use the extra money from you (setup fee, and
monthly charges), but then what do I know. Anyway, if you're going to
run a server on your connection, and you have no problem paying a bit
extra for the static Ip, then keeping it is probably the way to go.

no, the tech was right. They show a list of smtp addresses, but it's not for
home useage.
they usually supply a "q.com" or a msn.com email address or something
similar to home customers (odd)

Not sure what you mean by q.com. What domain you're on depends on who
you picked for your internet service. Qwest provides the
connection itself, but msn, or qwest.net provides the internet
services, and the domain you have would of course depend on who is
providing your internet service.

q.com is qwest. they offer either msn or q.com email for the basic

Actually the way it works, or the way it used to when I lived in Denver
was like this.
Qwest would provide the dsl connection, and by default they would add
msn as the isp. However, if you got another isp which was a
Qwest-approved carrier, you could use them over the Qwest dsl line. That
isp you chose would be the one to give you email access via their
routers. Now, ironically you could use qwest.net as the isp over qwest
dsl services. If you did this, you got no email access, not even through
qwest.net. This is the way I went with qwest as the dsl and the isp
without email access.
Hope this clears it up.

I think they've got multiple connections now.
Now they offer the ISP, and a modem etc etc, and I believe they're in
partmership with msn, or this q.com what ever that is.

Yes, this is old news. They've been partnered with MSN for 5 years or
more <smile>. Read my prior message on how it works.
