[Tony Baechler]

Hi all,

Samuel previously stated on this list that I was complaining but not 
helping with better Debian accessibility.  Therefore, I'm asking here 
first to find out what I should do.  Should I file a bug or is there 
something I can set in Speakup to get around the problem?

The problem is with the ircII client.  It seems to work fine and has no 
obvious accessibility problems.  It is a text mode program and works 
fine from the console.  However, everything I type is repeated by 
Speakup.  If I type the slash for example, I hear "slash slash."  If I'm 
typing a command like /help, I her "slash slash h h e e l l p p."  I can 
minimize this by turning off key echo, but I don't understand why it 
echos everything.  Is there a fix for this?  Other irc clients don't 
have that problem and I haven't found any other programs that do that.  
I used to have a similar problem in DOS but it had to do with graphics.  
I think it might be how it writes to the screen, since the cursor isn't 
always on the same line as the text I type, but I think I tried turning 
off cursor tracking with no improvement.

Should I use a different irc client, just live with it, file a bug or 
what?  What other irc clients are people using?  I've installed all the 
text mode clients that come with Debian, but I really think I like ircII 
best.  Is there another client not available in Debian that I should 
compile from source?  Is it an issue with the Debian scripts?  Thanks 
all for any other thoughts you might have.

Sorry if I have proved a bit harsh, but it looks like it brought some
benifits :)

In this case, I guess a bug against the debian package alone wouldn't
help since the maintainer of the package doesn't know how speakup work.

I guess your mail was the proper way, since it's now in my mbox to look
at when I have time :)

In the meanwhile you may try irssi if you haven't already.

I've never had that problem with speakup, but my usage isn't really much to 
speak uf.
I personally like BitchX the best--though you should read docs before you 
use it.

The epic client works well for me, but I use the lice script with it, so 
ymmv. I also don't use the debian package.

Hi,

I'm relatively new to irc.  I used it back in about 1995 or so on a 
shell account but haven't revisited it until recently.  I'm familiar 
with the epic4 client and have installed the Debian package but I'm not 
familiar with that script.  Is it part of the source tarball or do I 
download it from elsewhere?  Why do you use it and does it help 
accessibility somehow?  Is there any particular reason why you don't use 
the Debian package?

I'm not sure if lice improves epic accessibility, but it does improve 
usability, for me anyway.

It looks like Debian has a package for lice at:

I don't use the Debian packages, because I don't use Debian. <grin> I 
usually compile my own epic client, because I like to modify the source, 
so it doesn't advertise my os and kernel version.

	I use irssi, myself, probably because I haven't tried the epic4
package, maybe.  irssi is much quieter than bitchx, with all the status
displays making a racket.  irssi could still use an easy command to:

	cat file.txt > #channelname

...without flooding, but it does the job, I guess.  Only real annoyance
is irssi says your nick every time someone joins the channel, and you
mistakenly think someone is addressing you.  The first command a person
needs to learn is:

	/ignore #channelname joins parts quits

...to cut down on annoying noise.  I had been hacking into the config
files to get rid of the user's addresses from being spoken before I
learned the command.  My LiteTalk synthesizer happily mangles the
pronunciation of most nicknames, and it's a bear cursoring up to try to
highlight and spell the nickname when the channel's really active.  You
might get better results with one of the soft synths.  I haven't tried
that as yet.  I just like irssi as it's relatively easy to quiet down,
and saves aliases into it's configuration, unlike bitchx, where you have
to manually edit a text file from outside the program.

	Nope.  epic4 blows.  Gotta say what and were you want to save,
which prolly means the same to load things, and the status bar is noisy.

Well, actually ircii seems to always print things twice.  You may want
to try the -d option, which uses a less visual mode.

To make something very clear which it may not be because they sound
the same when using most synths ircii is not irssi which there is also
a debian package for.  The nice thing about 'i r s s i' is your
various open channels and msgs can have separate windows just like
tabs in a web browser or virtual consoles so you can have many
conversations going on in different windows at the same time.  A
feature I'd hate to go back to not having.

Hi,

I think the ircii package has this feature also with the screen script.  
I haven't tried it, but the screen script emulates the functionality of 
screen (1).  I don't know if Debian ships that script or not.  I'm 
talking about the irc 2 (or IrcII) client.  The screen script does come 
with the standard source distribution.  If that isn't what you meant, 
I'm sorry.  I haven't tried the script myself but I read the notes at 
the top.  You can create new windows, have multiple servers open in 
different windows, etc.  I think epic4 might have similar functionality 
but I haven't looked at it much.

Hi All.  If there is not an IRC channel for Speakup, I will create on on my own IRC network, the WWIrcNet IRC Network.  It's URL is at http://wwircnet.andrelouis.com and it has many little servers.  Not so many users though LOL.  Unless there is already a Speakup channel, I will create it.

Why not create it on freenode? That is where a lot of other open source 
project channels are.
