Hi,
Thanks to the suggestion posted on here, I managed to find the problem
and fix it. It was a small typo in a configuration file which I didn't know
about.
Now, Speech-dispatcher works, more or less. The problem is with Espeak.
The speech is rather choppy, for lack of a better word, at least when I try
to use it with the speakup_soft module.
It seems as if the first few microseconds of short phrases are being cut
off, making them impossible to hear. Longer phrases are understandable
after a few seconds, but they, too, initially are cut off. I'm not really
sure how else to describe it.
I have heard on other lists I'm on about problems related to Alsa
1.0.16. I wonder if anybody's found a workaround for them yet?
Thanks much,
Zack.

Yeah, this is an issue with either the alsa libs or utils, don't
remember which, 1.0.6. I described this a while back on this list, and
was advised by Chuck Hallenbeck to downgrade to 1.0.15. A while after
that, chuck posted that the newest debian alsa packages fixed this on
his system after the latest upgrade, and I found that to be true
myself after I upgraded. I'd suggest getting the very latest version
of alsa libs/utils/drivers, and I think you'll find the problem will
go away.

Oops, that should've been 1.0.16.

Hi Greg,
For now, Gentoo and company don't seem to have committed the same bug
fixes to the packages as Debian has. I'm going to try alsa 1.0.15 and hope
for the best.
Thanks for the tip,
Zack.

Zach,
Actually, the fix Greg mentioned was to revert to alsa 1.0.15, so it
wasn't a fix in the usual sense, but a rolling back to a version
without the 1.0.16 problem.

Chuck,
I remember the issue was with the alsa libs, libasound2 to be exact I
think. On my debian testing system, the info for libasound2 shows:
Package: libasound2
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 1.0.16-2
This is the version that apt-get dist-upgrade installed for me after I
took the hold off libasound2, once I read your post that things with
alsa were back to normal on debian unstable. So, are you saying that
libasound2 1.0.16-2 is in reality libasound2 1.0.15?

Hmm ... that's what mine says too. But the kerhel upgrade of 2.6.24
from patch 5 to patcyh 6 reports the also version as 1.0.15 instead of
1.0.16. So your guess is as good as mine, probably better <smile>
I use the Debian source tree packages with their patches, instead of
kernels from kernel.org.

Debian Rulez! (Except for not having a SpeakUP kernel.)
