Hi,
So I hear speakup will work with a software synth like festival. Is there a way I can grab a debian installer and type in a command at the boot prompt and have speakup come up running festival or some software synth? If so, what should I type and what site should I go to to get the debian install disk

The short answer is that no, the debian install disk doesn't have software speech, you will need a hardware synth to install. The long answer is that you can install debian via debootstrap, install the software speech components, and hope it all works when you reboot into the new system. As far as I know, debootstrap is only useful for installing Debian based systems. The kernel won't be installed by default. It's mainly a run-from-cd type thing, (sorry, I'm under two pain pills, and more meds), so I'm half out of it, and my terminology won't work. I believe that it's a speakup kernel. Well, getting back to your original question, can you give the debian installer disk parms to boot into software speech? No. You'll need a hardware synth to install from the debian installation CD. It is possible to install debian linux via software speech. What you need to do is: 1. Boot a live distro with speech like grml or knoppix or oralux (or maybe ubuntu) 2. Manually partition your disk. You'd probably use fdisk for this although different live distros might have different partitioners. 3. Transfer the base system to your hard drive via debootstrap 4. chroot to the new system 5. Install a kernel 6. Reboot Obviously, each step above is quite a bit more detailed than that. But you can find documentation on manually installing debian via google, If you google for terms like debootstrap, chroot, ffdisk, you will probably find them. If you don't have a hardware synth, another thing you can do is install via a serial console. Hi, Codi, do you not already run Ubuntu with orca? If so, Just make sure that you have speech-dispatcher installed from a gnom terminal. For speakup to work you need speech-dispatcher, a synth like espeak, speech_dup and the speakup stuff which is already in the kernel. To activate speakup when you use software speech, you do not run speakup, but speechd_up. You can run speechd_up once you know that speech-dispatcher is running. You can do all of this from a gnome terminal except running speechd_up which you do from the console. The short answer is no. Speakup modified installers use hardware synths. If you want to use speakup with software speech, just install speech-dispatcher speechd-up and your synth of choice. Do you get speech when you type spd-say "hello world" If so, then speech-dispatcher is working. If not, edit speech-dispatcher's config files until the spd-say command works. Once you have speech-dispatcher working, just sudo modprobe speakup_sftsyn Speakup will start talking. If you want speakup to load autimatically on boot, add the line speakup_sftsyn to /etc/modules. Be aware, you will have to press print screen everytime you boot and log into Gnome since speakup will try to read your X console. When playing with installing debian via grml-debootstrap, I found the biggest uncertainty was if the software speech in the new system works or not. As I found out after rebooting, software speech didn't work, there was no data in the logs, and nobody to read the screen for me, so that was the end of that experiment. Yes, I did have a speakup-patched kernel installed, and the system did boot, according to the other logs in /var/log of the new system. So, if one does an install of debian via debootstrap, is there a way to test software speech in the chrooted system, before you actually boot into it?
