Hiya,
I have decided to go the route of installing FC7 via Telnet.
However, there is a single point in the instructions which I find somewhat vague. The speakupmodified.org site states that I should follow the instructions up to the point where I type at the boot prompt. Does this include down arrowing and hitting tab and space? What, exactly, do these keystrokes do?
Thanks much in advance,
Zack.

Yes.

Beats me, though I suspect it fills in the initial part of the boot
loader line, such as the kernel image to boot, along with the default
parameters, but I'm just guessing here.

When the ISO boots, there is a screen with three choices. The second one is
"boot from CD/DVD" and that's the one you get to by pressing the down arrow.
The tab and space get you to the end of that line so you can add
"speakup_synth=xxx and press enter to bring up the talking install.

Since you want a telnet install, you don't have to put the speakup_synth=xxx
on the line as a boot option but you do still have to do the down arrow,
tab, press space, then put the desired options, such as "telnet" (see the
howto for full details).

I should probably remove references to the boot prompt as there is now a
menu where there actually used to be a command line prompt.

Yes, you do want to do the TAB and space thing. It starts you down the
path of a text based installation, and puts a space at the end of the
command. You then continue by specifying the parameters you need to
specify, telnet, perhaps your's ethernet device's mac address with
ksdevice=, etc.

Note that you can avoid this piece of non speaking difficulty if your
computer will boot from a USB memory stick.. If so, you can simply add
those parameters to the appropriate section of the syslinux.cfg file on
the stick using any good text editor. Then, when you boot, you simply
wait for your computer to come on line--to respond to the ping--at which
point you're ready to telnet to it.

Hi list,

i've got a question about the speakup and telnet install:

1. could anyone tell me how to install via pppoe that means a machine,
which is not behind a router. I would only use the DSL-modem.
2. if it's possible, what must i type for the install?

many thanks

regards

Marco

Using telnet to install Fedora isn't restricted in any way. It's
possible to install with telnet on a machine half way around the world,
if you can organize such a thing. In fact this is how I install Fedora
on our SpeakupModified.Org server, which I have never touched and will
never visit, because it is housed thousands of miles away from me at a
data center.

If your reference to your DSL modem means you're thinking of using a
remote rpm repository as the source of installation media, this is, of
course, possible. However, it may not be wise. Connections are all too
frequently interrupted on the Internet, and even a short, two second
interruption can demolish your installation. Before you attempt such a
thing, consider how you will recover should something go wrong. In fact
what I have just described happened to me while we moved our server from
FC6 to F-7. It took me over a week to restore all the data to the remote
machine.

If you absolutely must install using a remote repository, my advice is
to install the minimum of packages in order to minimize your exposure to
an installation crash. You can always yum groupinstall the remaining
packages you want later with much more safety. Unfortunately for me,
even this bit of wisdom could not help in my little installation
disaster, because my crash occured before any packages were
installed--but after disk formatting--the worst time, actually.

What to type is explained in our on line documents:

http://SpeakupModified.Org/HOWO_INSTALL.html
http://SpeakupMOdified.Org/telnet_installation.html

Good luck!

Janina
