Hello list,
I just installed debian on my AMD.
When I took it to the penteum 3, it says:
waiting for root filesystem.
When I put it back in am, it boots perfectly.
I would like to install another hd, and get my stuff off of it, But, the problem there, is that when I do that, it just sits at compac, and doesn't move.
Any help would really be appriciated. I've got lots of work on those, and would like to keep moving with my projects.
Thanks,
~~TheCreator~~

you cannot mix hd installs with other machines because when you install
linux, it is compiled and molded to that particular system and no other
systems I have the same issue when I do it. Do a clean install on the
machine you want to run it on.

by the way, how did you do the install I'm interested, do you have an
external synth?

Sorry, but I don't think linux "molds" the kernel to the computer, unless
your talking about grub.
I've done an install, and moved the harddrive around.
Also, this would kill the purpose of a USB key.
Anyway, the issue is on the comp I installed it on. (Not being able to add a
second drive).
Thanks,

You can also edit by hitting e, at grub prompt, and then editing grub.
But, It's already root hd(0, 0)

Say what? This is not true, I have done it dozens of times. I have in
fact set up machines as build machines for others. The only thing that
is "molded" is the kernel. As said in recent thread, what you need is
a generic kernel, not pentium or amd specific. To be more clear, in
the kernel config, you want 386 processor:

Subarchitecture Type
PC-compatible (CONFIG_X86_PC)

Processor family
386 (CONFIG_M386)

A 386 kernel will boot on anything. You also want generic chipset
stuff, not anything specific to the original hardware. The easiest way
to achieve this is to get one of the already made generic kernels,
the ones that boot when you run an install. On slackware that is
called bare.i, it will boot on anything! Equivalents are available on
other distros. And repeating what I said before: if a kernel will
not boot on any system, boot with floppy or cd, load the kernel
from that media but use the root= parameter to boot into the
root on the hard drive. This has never failed for me unless the
drive is toast. You need to catch the boot: prompt and do
something like

boot: bare.i root=/dev/hda1 noinitrd ro

where bare.i is the name of your generic kernel. You should
be able to find a generic kernel for debian. Once you have
booted from the CD or floppy, with the root= to your hard
drive, you have a running system, build a kernel on the target
and then update bootloader. It is definitely possible to move
drives from one machine to another.

I seem to recall your saying the p3 machine is a compaq. If that's so,
then it wouldn't at all surprise me that you're having issues, just because
your connecting another hd. My personal name for that brand is
comcrap, and I'm not the only one to feel this way. Check out:

http://www.compaqsucks.com

Yes, such a site really exists, and based on my personal experience
with machines of that brand, the content of that site isn't just
malicious propaganda.

I know this wasn't a concise answer to your problem, and one you
probably wouldn't have wanted to get if this is a compaq, but in
summary, if this is a compaq, I'm not at all surprised with the hd
problems you're having.

Well then, get used to the idea that it may not be possible for you to
use that drive, or for that matter any other drive that didn't come
with that machine in that machine.

I have an hp compaq nx6325 laptop, and it has no problems as of yet.
I do hate the compaq desktops though, and on a related linux note apparently the laptop has acpi problems and makes the fan mess up so the cpu getts up to 167 f. This is probably why I haven't even tryed putting any linux distro on it.

thanks, for all the help.
I asked for how to fix the solution, not for some compac critic to complain
about it.
This is what I have, but my offer is still open. Feel free to ship me a p3,
that meets your standards.

As far as I know, though I haven't had personal experience with them,
the hp/compaq machines made after the two merged, aren't of bad
quality. It's the pre-merge compaqs that are garbage. I don't even
know if your laptop
is from before the merge, or after.

I'll agree that compaq desktops pretty much suck, but the workstation
models I've had experience with (mainly deskpro 4000 series) have been
pretty good, and their server machines are really nice imho. Though
there are some stupid design choices in the desktop and workstation
models that really irritate me, such as the hdd-based bios setup
program.

I mean, well, if it were not for Linux I might be roaming the streets looking
for drugs or prostitutes or something. Hannu and Linus have my highest
admiration (apple polishing mode off).

Do you change the jumper on the second hard drive to make it a slave
drive before you boot the system? Could the files be copied via a
network connection from another computer where the drive containing
your projects can be successfully installed?

HTH, and have a great day.

I set it to slave, etc.
And see my future posts... or well. I've posted anyway.
I'm trying to figure out how to use an enclosure, to get the stuff from one
system to another.
Thanks,
