I have set the cursor on, forms and links for numbers, user mode to
advanced and underlined links to on so why am I having problem with
links being read out on a line when I use the standard up and down
arrow keys, links being repeated and for example when I go to google,
the form for search isn't announced as if there is no number for the
edit field when doing a search or am I missing something in settings
which is making it more difficult to focus which why I am having
difficulty scrolling down web pages using up and down arrow?
Do I perhaps need to use the speakup keystrokes for navigating through
pages more than I would normally when using a web browser in Windows
where I can go up and down pages with the standard arrow keys and it
reads either text or links depending on where you are on a page rather
than trying to put all the links together and maybe causing a problem
when navigating?

Ok, let me see if I can help here. First, you're probably having the
links repeating issue when arrowing, because you have cursor tracking
set to on. I personally turn it off when browsing, because I'm used to
how speakup reads in lynx that way, though highlight tracking may do
better here, I don't know.
Second, as far as I know, lynx doesn't number forms such as the search
box in google. If you come to a text box that doesn't speak, use your
read previous line key to find out what it is.
I personally find it cumbersome to navigate the page by using the arrow
keys. This isn't browse mode/msaa/whatever your windows screen reader
calls it. What I personally do is to use the read screen key, memorize
the number of the link I want to check out, and either stop reading at
that point, or wait for speakup to finish reading the screen if I'm
interested in what else is there. For the times I do want to browse
line by line, I use the speakup review keys, and then use the slash
key to search for where I want to go to, arrive on that link, and hit
enter.
This is how I personally browse in lynx, and others may prefer to do
it differently. Use whatever methods work for you here. Hth.

One thing with which I struggled when browsing in *nix is that there is no
virtual browse mode. You are pretty much viewing the screen as a sighted
person would see it; exactly as the web author intended for it to appear.
This is why your arrow keys do not work. Also, this is why we prefer to
number links because it is often difficult to tell where the links are.
When you are confronted with a new site, read it in its entirety, which is
what you should do anyways, then go back to the top and search for what you
need with the / (slash) key.

I wonder whether your expectations of lynx are conditioned by
experience of gui browsers? If so, lynx isn't like that. Up and down
arrow in lynx takes you to next and previous hyperlinks, not lines of
text on screen. Tab and Alt-Tab will do the same, by the way. Please
note it's the old, traditional Unix Alt-Tab, and not Windows Shift-Tab
for backward motion in lynx.
PS; Michael, do you think you might limit yourself to one though per
sentence? I, for one, would find it much easier to answer your questions
if you could learn to end one sentence before starting another thought.
I'm willing to wager you've heard this criticism from various teachers
before, but you needn't answer me on that, of course.

Honestly, when I saw your typo, I thought that you were suggesting that he
only put one instance of the word "though" in a sentence. Might I suggest
that you spell check yours? :)
