Hiya,
The kernel successfully detected and recognized my USB serial converter, however the device name is now /dev/ttyUSB0. I'm not sure how to get Speakup to communicate with this port, but I'm going to assume it's possible somehow.
I'd appreciate any advice on how to get this to work.
Thanks,
Zack.

Given the messages on the cell phone thread yesterday, why would you
make such an assumption?

Well, it is an assumption based on several of the messages which I read, and
upon the fact that the kernel does recognize and properly connfigure the
device. Perhaps 'hope' this is possible would be a better word, however.
Yours,
Zack.

In that case, there's no point in hoping, at least right now. Once
someone rewrites the speakup serial code to handle ports with
non-standard i/o addresses, then perhaps you can start hoping again.

As I understand it, when those previous messages were saying "it should
be possible" to get speakup working with a USB serial port convertor,
the meaning was that it is technically possible for speakup to be
modified to do that, but not that speakup can do it with the code as is.
You probably can (I would expect) that you could use the external synth
with one of the other linux screen readers (eg. those which use
emacspeak speech servers (orca can, but only some of the drivers, to my
disappointment), and of course emacspeak. I don't know about yasr and
screader.).

Sorry for the confusion, it is already possible for the kernel
to direct console output to USB serial dongle, but speakup
needs to be modified for ability to write to the USB device
rather than RS232 serial ports at fixed port addresses and
interrupts, it is writing to ISA bus registers. It may be a
while before necessary mods are done to take the same
output and write to the USB bus instead.
