ot, configuring x

Hi all.

I'm running debian testing, or maybe I should call it Etch now.

I'm preparing to install gnome via garnome, and see how it goes. I did
however want to make sure that my video card server, monitor settings,
ETC., are configured correctly. I recall that you used to be able to
run:

dpkg-configure xfree86-common, and get to configure all of that
stuff. So, I just tried running

dpkg-configure x11-common,

since xfree86-common hasn't existed for a while now, and all I got
were questions on what users should be allowed to run x, and what
niceness to use for the x server.

Can someone please tell me what I'm missing? What do I need to run to
do the configuration, or is that whole pre-usage configuration process
unnecessary anymore? Thanks in advance.

Hi.

Try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Debian, like most other didstros, switched from xfree86 to xorg.

Try running xorgconf (like xf86-config), or xorgsetup (less options, 
so doesn't take as long to configure).

Greg,

It seems that x-windows has advanced quite a lot recently,
I never have to do any pre-configuration anymore. Even on
a fresh OS install, all I ever do is startx, and the x-windows
system figures out its settings automatically. This may not
be true in all cases, but it always works me this way, unlike
in the past when you had to configure x before running it.

Regarding permissions, I never do anything special with
x-windows, the x server should work for any user logged
into the system, and it writes files such as .Xauthority
into the user's home directory automatically.

Hi.

I have notice that the auto config on modern distros doesn't always get
it right.  You will end up with a system that works, but it will get the
keyboard and video wrong.  Ubuntu usually thinks I have a pc 105
keyboard when I actually have a pc 104 keyboard.  This config will work,
but I won't have the right alt key or the context key.
Also, Ubuntu chooses the visa driver instead of the nv driver.  The visa driver will work, but the X system will have better performance if I switch to the 
correct driver.
