cross all ten of your toes and all ten of your fingers and try the command
as root: apt-get remove --purge package-name If it fails and you've
already installed aptitude then try: aptitude update aptitude dist-upgrade
and allow aptitude to fix what it will. Maybe this will get fixed.

thanks, tried.
found out the person I gave root to removed perl.
I thought they had just removed a pakcage, or that I did...

Hello All,

I am running Windows XP via VMPlayer on top of a Debian distro with
Speakup compiled into a 2.6.18 kernel. (straight in, not as modules) I
am using Speakup with a Dectalk Express attached to /dev/ttyS0.

What I would like to do is get the Window-Eyes running on the Windows XP
working with the dectalk express.

Since Speakup completely takes over and locks /dev/ttyS0,
I successfully managed to set up a virtual serial port on the virtual
machine that pointed to /proc/speakup/synth_direct on the host machine
(Debian running Speakup) I thought for a moment that by doing this I
could then get Window-Eyes to use the Dectalk Express. Unfortunately this
didn't really work. Setting Window-Eyes to use any serial hardware synth
other than the Dectalk Express does result in speech mixed with synth
codes being spoken by the Dectalk. When I set Windo-Eyes to use the
Dectalk Express, no speech at all happens. I'm guessing this may have to
do with flow-control or some setting that I would need to play with to get
working.

The other reason this method won't work now that I think about it is
because the synth_direct device is defaulted to only be writable which
implies to me that it isn't readable and there for things like indexing
won't work.

Does anyone know of a better way to achieve my objective of being able to
fully access the serial port attached to the Dectalk express? Is there a
speakup device or work around that will allow this to happen?

Thanks in advance,

   Monty

Have you tried /dev/synth instead?

Also, could you please consider writing up a howto of some sort
describing what you did to get to where you are at now running winxp
under VMPlayer? I for one would be interested in seeing what the
procedure is like, and I probably am not the only one.

To access the dectalk express, you need to either connect it to another
serial port, or fool linux into releasing the port that speakup is
using. try:
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart 16550a
I don't have a linux machine atm to test that on, but it should work.
just echo anything that the dectalk can speak to it to make sure, and
make sure that speakup and window eyes don't try to use the same synth -
interesting results can occur.

Hello,

Thanks to Greg and Tyler for suggestions on how to essentially allow
bi-directional communications directly to a Dectalk Express while Speakup is
active. Unfortunately, I still am not having success.

For others who may be reading this, I am specifically trying to allow Windows
XP that I have running with VMWare on my Debian box with Speakup compiled into
the kernel to access /dev/ttyS0 which is currently locked by Speakup.

For VMWare configuration reasons, I can't seam to use /dev/synth, and although
I can send data to /proc/speakup/direct_synth, I can not receive data (such as
indexing info back through that method). At this point it would really seam
that I need to be able to use /dev/ttyS0 even while locked by speakup.

I tried Tyler's suggestion of executing:

setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart 16550a

And, although the command executed fine, it didn't seam to make a
difference. Have you had success with this? If so, at what point do you
run setserial? Prior to running vmplayer or after Windows is up?

If anyone has thoughts on how to get this working that would be much
appreciated. Even if you haven't played with VMWare, the general problem is
just being able to echo (and receive) data to the serial port in use by
Speakup

BTW: I plan on writing a HowTo on my experiences of getting VMWare working
with Debian plus a successful unattended instalation of Windows XP.

Thanks for the help

Best regards,
   Monty

Monty,
I think you're running into a kernel issue here.
What I think the main issue is, is a generic m$ issue.
Winblows nt, especially xp, in an attempt to try to get people to be kernel
safe decides to lock everyone out, which means you have to go through the
kernel to do anything.
VmWare may be able to simulate things, but it may not be able to go down to
the hardware abstraction layer, which is what you may need if your going to
the serial port.
