I'm curious what others here on the list might use for sharing file
systems over a local area network. I'm mainly talking about going
between different Linux boxes. Obviously, I use Samba for connecting my
Linux clients to Windows machines. But I wonder about the merit of
using Samba to share between Linux boxes or if I should use NFS instead.
Curious minds want to know:).

Hi Steve. I use NFS over my LAN, and in my specific case over my VPN as well to stream music/copy files. It works quite well.

Though I've used nfs in the passed when running a diskless box a good
while ago, I use samba here nowadays, since that means I can also
share files and my printer between windows machines as well, and I
can't use nfs on windows of course, not right out of the box anyway.

Yeah, in some ways, I find Samba easier to set up too. My only
complaint right now is all the files I copy onto a Samba share end up
with the execute bit set on. That plays havic with mplayer when I wanna
play sound files. Actually, it's mc that has trouble with the execute
bit on sound files. When I use mc to browse a directory, I have it set
up to where I can hit the enter key on a file and mplayer plays it; if
execut bit is on, that doesn't work for some reason. Anyway, that's
just one of the pit-falls of using SMB to share files. I might be able
to find a way around this problem though.

I use short-term nfs mounts of directory trees for performing backups
and upgrading software across my LAN. Nfs has worked quite well for
me in this capacity.
HTH, and have a great day.

Is that because it is trying to execute it? Linux has no extentions
depicting the file as a program.
