I've noticed a minor annoyance with Speakup and my USB Keyboard. Note
that I haven't tested with any other keyboard, but I can only get
speakup to be silent after the keyboard driver has loaded. This is fine,
but I would like an option so that speakup can be silent when it first
boots; without having to echo something to /proc/speakup/synth_name if I
set the synth keyword to none at boot. I'm proposing an option that will
keep speakup shut off (print screen mode), then you could just turn it
on with print screen once the computer booted or you needed it for
something.
I don't have the kernel coding skills needed to make a patch, or I would
do so.

Thanks,
Tyler

The problem with you USB keyboard is caused by the fact that USB
keyboard support is disabled in your BIOS by default. You will need to
get someone to help you change this. Once I turned USB keyboard support
on in my BIOS, I stopped haven the exact problem you describe. Note
that it also keeps you from using multiple kernels in you boot loader if
it is disabled.

HTH,
Lorenzo

The USB Keyboard support is enabled in my bios, since I can control my
bootloader (grub) just fine. I think it's the fact that the kernel
doesn't load the keyboard modules for a few seconds after it boots - on
the grml live cd I have ot listen to the boot messages for about 15 or
30 seconds before I can get it to shut up, but on my debian boot or grml
from the hd only the first line.

Hmm. This is very odd. If USB keyboard support is enabled in your
bios, it should actually work independent of a kernel driver until the
kernel driver is loaded. At that time, control is transfered to the
kernel driver, so there should be no delay before you are able to shutup
speakup. The keymap, as far as I know, should also be loaded by the
time Speakup starts speaking. I have plugged my USB keyboard into both
my desktop and my laptop, both with no delay between the time Speakup
starts speaking and the time I can shut it up. But maybe the problem is
caused by the fact that you are using Speakup compiled into your kernel
and I am using it as modules. It is possible that there is a break in
USB keyboard support between the time the kernel image starts to load
and the time the Speakup modules are loaded that I am unable to detect
because my Speakup modules are being loaded slightly later in the boot
process. In that case, you may want to reconfigure your kernel with HID
support compiled in. HID is the kernel name for USB keyboard/mouse
support.

HTH at least a little,
Lorenzo
