Upgrading Slackware

Upgrading Slackware

Hi folks.  I would like to upgrade from Slackware 10.1 to 10.2 but after 
looking at the site, the ibiblio.org ftp site and such, I'm confused.
I know bittoernt is all the rage these days but I know nothing about it 
and I can't seem to find a place to just download an Iso image to burn.
Barring that, I'm also thinking of looking into trying Debian again, so 
where would I look to download a speakup enabled iso of that particular 
distribution?

It is a "net install" image of 150 MB, speakup enbled, and it's all you 
need.

Thanks.  I'll go and get that.  I recall last summer looking at that but I 
think I got a bad burn since it seemed lots of the files were missing, or 
something.

Just to answer the slackware part of your question, given that 10.2
came out a while ago, I doubt that you would still be able to get it
via bittorrent. As you also observed, many of the slackware mirrors
either don't have the isos, or they're slow and over-loaded if they do
have the isos. I did find a mirror in Sweden, that is fast when
accessed from the U.S., and that does have all 4 slackware isos.

Net install?  Is there not a full ISO of the distro available?  Net 
installs kill dialup connections.  :)

correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the whole distro, with sources
and all, comes out to what ... 14 cds, right? So, if you think doing a
net install over dial-up is bad, try downloading all of those.

No. Since debian contains far more packages then slackware can ever
hope to have (unless they put a major effort into it), you can't break
debian down to just 1 or 2 disks. If memory serves, I believe that the
debian binary packages alone take up 7 isos, but I do stand to be
corrected on that.

I'm not sure why you want to use an ISO image for just an upgrade.  I
was able to do it by downloading the distribution directories and
following the directions in the 'UPGRADE.TXT' file which I found
there.  However, either way, you probably should use a mirror site for
Slackware--the file transfers will be far faster.  My favorite site is
at carroll.cac.psu.edu .  They have anonymous ftp and rsync at that
site, and allow downloads for a variety of Linux distributions--among
other things.

My advice is downgrade to slackware 10.0
I upgraded about a month ago to 10.2 and you would not beleave
the errors I get when trying to compile and run programs

Out of shere laziness, I haven't upgraded to Slackware 10.2 yet but my
10.1 has been fine and what things I've compiled have all gone with
success including 2.6 kernels.  So if you're gonna downgrade, I'd just
go back to 10.1; don't bother going even further back.  I usually like
to be as current as possible so I'll take the chance and see how things
go.  I know, I found with my last upgrade, I had to pay particular
attention to run time libraries to avoid numerous shared library missing
type errors but I figure I could eliminate most of that by install the
entire L series and be done with it.  I don't fully understand thr rhyme
or reason behind some of the library package make-ups but anyhow...

Why not just try a clean install of 10.2 to see if it fixes the 
problems?  My apologies if you have already tried this.
