Where can one find the Linux version of the Speak Freely software? I
went to speakfreely.org but it only has Windblows stuff.

Thanks,

Hi. If you want to use the Speakup Speak freely reflecter, then you
want to get our customized version of Speak Freely from
linux-speakup.org.

The commands for getting Speak Freely from the cvs server are:

cvs -d:pserver:linux-speakup.org:/usr/src/CVScvs -d:pserver:linux-speakup.org:/usr/src/CVS
checkout speak-freely

The user name is anonymous, and the password is please. Before you
issue the commands to get the Speak Freely source code, make sure you
are in the directory above where you want the Speak Freely source
directory to be created.

Make sure you have libreadline and it's associated header files
installed before you try to compile Speak Freely. You should be able to
compile the source as is, without editing the make file. Do not try to
use the alsa option in the make file, it is broke, and was never
completed.

Just as a reminder, the Speakup Speak Freely reflecter is at
gene3.ait.iastate.edu:4074. Our customized version of Speak Freely does
audio mixing, and allows for file transferes, as well as a chat history
file, and a file-transfere history file. Have fun!

In this message, Gene, you state that one should not use the Alsa
option in the Makefile. From the Makefile, I gather that it will
access Alsa through the OSS compatibility modules. When I boot my
system, I receive two errors pertaining to the loading of OSS
drivers. I have a 2.6.15.2 kernel and did not compile OSS in with
it. Is this an issue or should Speak Freely still function?

Hi Robby. Yes, you need to compile in the oss compatibility stuff.
It's not just speak freely that uses it, but also other audio apps.
Have fun.

Oh, also it sounds like the firewall problem maybe on your friends
side. You should probably get the sample reflector script in the
goodies directory and edit it for your details and try communicating
with the folks on the speakup reflector. That will give you
experience setting up and communicating which will go a long way
toward getting your connection working between you and your friend.

The only difference between the standard speak freely and our modified
version is we have added some extra features which make it nice for
communicating on a reflector. If you can hear your girl friend but
she cannot hear you then it sounds like a firewall problem most
likely. You must direct ports 2074-2076 and 4074-4076 through the
firewall to the machine you are running speak freely on.

Hello,

I am not having any luck with this at all. I am not sure if using
the official version versis the modified version makes much of a
difference, either. I first set up a reflector on a box that is
always online. My girlfriend and I then connect to it with the
Windows clients to test.  She could speak and I could hear her;
however, whenever I spoke, she could not hear me. I cannot be
heard. When we tried it under Linux: first, my mic isn't muted so I
hear the damned echo whenever I talk into it; secondly, she couldn't
hear me and I could not hear her. The Linux version gave no
indication as to whether I was connected or not; all it displayed was
to press the space bar to speak and . for text chat. In either case,
I really wish to use Linux but voice chatting is one thing I do on a
regular basis, so it is crucial that I have an application that
works. I got my email working and everything else; this is the only
issue remaining. If anyone has any suggestions or alternative
programs that I can try, I would appreciate the input. Thanks.

Robby

Woops on Gene's behalf, that should be speak_freely.

Hello,

Gene Collins posted a message to this list with the CVS commands for
obtaining the modified version of Speak Freely. The first one (for
logging in) worked; however, the checkout one says that the module
doesn't exist:
ace@millions:~$ cvs
-d:pserver:anonymous@linux-speakup.org:/usr/src/CVS checkout speak-freely
cvs server: cannot find module `speak-freely' - ignored
cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot expand modules
ace@millions:~$

Can someone tell me what's happening and what the proper module name is?

Robby

Hi. Do you know how to change the default port that Speak Freely uses for audio transmission. Because I don't really have an immediate way to open the port (s) that Speak Freely uses, so I just thought it would be easier to change the port (s) to something like 412 and 413 for example. Thanks!

Hi,

The only time I had trouble with JFW script files loading was when the
software I was trying to use the scripts for had changed the name of the
.exe file after the scripts were written. You may want to check to make
sure the script name is the same as the program name.

I've always seen it that way, and it works for me. That's all I know.

Hi. Note that my e-mail address hasn't changed yet, but it will after April
15th I believe because then yahoo's going to stop the pop access! Anyway,
I'm running the winblows version of Speak Freely, and got the jfw scripts to
work. However, I noticed that when I'm connected to echo.fourmilab.ch to
test my audio quality, it says: protocol: Idle. Shouldn't it say protocol:
Speak Freely? The speak freely option is checked under the protols menu.
Does anyone know why this may be happening? Thanks in advance!

Hi Igor,
Those scripts on the speakup website don't work at all! I have some much,
much better ones if you want them. Just email me privately and I'll email
them. There about 10k.

Hi Ameer. I am currently running version 3.70 update. The top-level dir is
jaws37u, then it goes \settings\enu. However, when I load speak freely, it
still indicates that default settings are located. Shouldn't it say that the
speak freely scripts are loaded or something like that? I personally don't
see why they might not be loading. Does anyone know why this could be
happening? Thanks in advance!

Get the jfw 3.71 update from hj's website, it works for anyone that uses jfw
3.7. Try it then, and if that doesn't work, write me and I'll continue to
help you as much as I can.

I thaught the directory for jfw 3.71 was jaws371. Or are you running a
different version or directory?

Yes but substandard kernel sound drivers cause speak-freely grief hence the
success with the alsa drivers. Some drivers don't honnor the o_nonblock flag.

Hi:

Speakfreely should work with pretty much any soundcard (with a few
exceptions under linux), and any modem above about 20kbps.

Geoff.

can speak freely be used with an awe64 card on a 38400 bps modem for listen only?
i don't have a microphone, and i'm sure you wouldn't want me hooking my cd player into
speakfreely to try to get a microphone.

Below is the contents of my /usr/local/bin/sfr, which should connect to
the reflector. I've only just gotten speakfreely working, and really
haven't had a chance to try things though.
