I have added a new command to speakup CVS for the litetalk driver. It
is a read all command to make it easier to read thru entire documents in
applications that use the down arrow to scroll thru a document. The
command can be accessed by using the 'speakup key' and the 'r' key.
Once pressed it should read thru the document line by line until a key
is pressed to stop the read all. The shift will cause the speakup to
skip to the next line.
Currently this command only works for the litetalk driver, but I
believe it should be pretty easy to add support for other drivers
depending on if and how indexing is supported in different synths. If
anyone is intersted in trying to add support for another driver I can
help you with it.
Also if someone tries to get this from CVS could you let me know if
everything downloads correctly. I had to make changes to many different
files and I just want to know that they were all updated correctly.

This sounds like a very interesting feature for sure. I do have a
couple questions though. How do you stop it from reading if you don't
wanna hear any more and speakup isn't to the bottom yet? The other
questions is more a statement that I would like to add support for the
Speakout (spkout) synth and possibly the Accent PC. I would think if it
gett it working for an Accent PC that I could also get it in place for
the SA model as well. My SA is broken so I can't test with it but I'm
pretty sure the Accent drivers are similar enough in most areas. My
first priority would be the Speakout as I use that one the most. Hum,
the software speech driver woulde a good one to work on too.

To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
It said that "until a eky is pressed to stop the reading". So you'd press
any key, apart from the shift, which moves on a line. Is this right?

Has the DEC express been done yet? If not, I would be happy to give it a
shot.

I have just done a CVS checkout, and according to the changelog, there
has been no change since my last checkout.
What code in the litetalk driver identifies the read all command?

This is an ad for a current product from E-bay. I wonder if anything
similar to this might be currently available to someone like me new to
linux who'd like to set it up even though I have only a Dubltalk external
box and atypical windows PC cable of running windows 98se.
If such a product for blind PC users exists please advise where I can
purchase such a CD, as I have only dial-up access and obviously can't
easily download it.
If such a disk does not exist it would be a real winner for folks like me
wanting to start using linux.

Well, Will, just as well, you can download oralux, which has different speech
engines-and-at least 2 screen-readers. The package isn't really large.

You can get Knoppix, I think it is found at the SpeakUp site.
Maybe a friend or neighbor can download it and burn it for you.
It is free and I think it is quite good.

instead which has a somewhat newer version and has speakup already in

I second the recommendation of GRML. Although I run FC4 on multiple
systems, the totally CD based GRML system is a great tool for use on
non-Linux systems. It offers an easy way to run Linux with no installation
effort. The Grml tools can even be useful for doing maintenance on a
Windows system. Even without speech, it can be booted for ssh access from
another system. Just wait for the CD to go quiet and type ssh=x. That
activates an ssh daemon with 'x' as the ssh password

Thanks for the recommendation. I'd like to get the GRML CD but it appears
I may have to order from overseas. Is there a way I can buy this disc

Well there's Oralux. Let's you try both Braille and software speech
together. I've found it very helpful for learning emacs in a playpen -- a
place where you can't mess up your real system. Also it's been interesting
for me to run Oralux and look at system output like lsmod and dmesg to see
what is being used from the kernel on my particular systems.
I've also used oralux as a live rescue CD when I messed up my sound card
drivers so badly that my system no longer talked.
I understand you can even compile software using Oralux and store the
results on a usb drive for transfering to another box. Probably I'll try
that next.

I have also used Oralux for finding out what hardware a machine has. A few
days ago, I bought a used scsi card and I couldn't get Winders to detect
it. So I bbooted into Oralux and found out what card it was. Of course, as
it turns out, there are no Win XP drivers. So I put it in my debian machine.

The added code to the drivers should be very simple. Basically it will
just be reading the index number from the port and the command to output
it. All the code dealing with the indexes themselves will be dealt with
in the files that apply to all the drivers. As long as the different
synths work similarly to Litetalk, it shouldn't be too difficult to
update them.

I will have to do like with the Speakout and Acents in that order.
Indexing has always overwelmed me a bit when looking at it in the past.
When things are stable, let me know (if everything is included) and I
intend to work on Speakout for sure and Accents if the former goes well
for me:).

The DEC express has not been done yet.
If you look in the litetalk code and see a command 'get_index' then it
has the new code for the Read All command.
I suggest waiting until Kirk updates 2.6.14 and I upload the new
sentence support I'm adding to speakup before you start working on it.
If you want to try and help and start looking into it you can start
looking at the driver and looking at documentation on how indexing works
on the DEC. I can help you with it also once I get all the new changes
uploaded in the next week or two.

I believe it would work for any key except 'shift' and the arrow keys,
page up and page down and the function keys. The control key is the
best key to use though, because any key you press is sent to the
application, so it would send that key press to the application and the
control key generally has no effect on an application.

If you want to stop it from reading you just hit a key to stop reading.
I use the Control key to stop it. Then just start it again to get it
reading again. Also it doesn't stop when it hits the bottom, so you
have to stop it manually.
If you want to help testing with those drivers I can look into them and
help you get them working. Hopefully it will be fairly easy to get
other drivers working.
The easiest driver to get working should be the double talk, I'll
update my attempt at the double talk driver when I upload the keyboard.c
patch fix.

I think there was a problem in the update to CVS. I don't think it
updated the patch for keyboard.c correctly with my new code. I've
emailed Kirk on how to get the patch file to update correctly. Or if
anyone knows how, please let me know.
