zinf tips please

zinf tips please

I know lots of folks use and like zinf, so I thought I would give it a 
test run here.

I installed zinf, zinf-extras, and zinf-plug-in-alsa on this Debian 
system, and then looked in vain for clues in the documentation as to how 
to get started. I found the "preferences" file which seems strategic, 
but I don't see anything in it that I should obviously change. The man 
page is not helpful, and there seems to be no help option in the 
software itself. 

When I do this:

zinf file.mp3

I get this:

The Download Manager cannot run as the primary ui
The musicbrowser cannot run as the primary ui
No UI plugin in '.:~/.zinf:/usr/lib/zinf' matched 
'plugins/musicbrowser.ui' or 'plugins/musicbrowser.ui.ui.'
Zinf will quit.


I would appreciate some tips or references as to what to read to make 
this thing work. Are the Debian packages the wrong way to go? Should I 
get the sources and build it locally?

In your .zinf/preferences file you will find a line that says

UI: zinf.ui

Change that line to

UI: cmdline.ui

This should solve your problem.

Hi Lorenzo,

I found that line and made the change, but the behavior of the program 
did not change. I will double check my typing, but I am pretty sure I 
did it as you suggested.

I found another line that might be of interest.  Change

TextUI: zinfcmd.ui

to

TextUI: cmdline.ui

Maybe this will do it?

Hi Lorenzo,

I found that too, but no dice. I have two files from Kenny for 
comparison that I will dig into, but now I need to cut away for 
breakfast, so this task is now on ice for a bit.

Hi.

You are correct that you need to make some changes to the preferences
file for best results with zinf.

I'll attach a preferences file that uses the command line interface and
oss for output.
I also have a file that uses the ncurses interface and alsa for output.
Let me know if you also want it for comparison.

Okay, I have zinf working now. 

Lorenzo, my apology, I did make a typo in those changes. But I also made 
my preferences file look a lot like the one Kenny sent, and whichever 
fix made it work, it is now playing.

Kenny, a question:

Lots of entries in your preferences file seem to be nearly identical 
duplicates of each other, differing only in the expansion of "Dir" to 
"Directory" for instance. What's that all about? Neither produces an 
error, so I suppose they are synonyms. Is it safe to delete one of each 
pair? Which one?

Hi.

That is probably because the first file I sent has been 
updated by more than one version of zinf in the last 2 years.
It was from my box that started out as Woody and moved later to Sarge
while spending some time as a Sid box.  It is now running Sarge.  During
the years, it was edited to fix some older bugs in earlier releases of
Zinf.

The second file I sent was from my Sid box which was installed more
recently.

I don't know what is safe to delete.
If you want, I also now have a copy of the preferences that got created
when I installed zinf on a new Sarge box.  It should have only the
latest versions of the entries.  I'll attach it to this message in case
it will help clear up the confusion.  I should have probably waited
until after coffee and looked before posting anything.

All the files work, so I didn't even realize until you pointed it out
that they have so much stuff in them.  This is a good example of how
Debian just evolves over the years.

Hi Kenny,

I am running Sid, and can use my own default preferences as a model. I 
may do some pruning, but it does seem to be working fine. I like the 
ncurses interface and am using alsa.pmo instead of soundcard.pmo too. 
Very nice.

Your default preferences is identical to mine except for directory 
names. So that helps guide my pruning, I guess.
