Hi all:
I have a couple of questions about DECtalk software and gnopernicus. The
first, is that while in X I do the alt-f2 then type gnopernicus, and after
getting no responce that I can detect, I jumped back to a console and
checked to see of in fact gnopernicus is even running, and acording to ps
x it is. I have installed the dectalk software, but maybe not in the
correct directory, one was never specified as far as I know. I got the
say command to work with both quoted text and a text file in the console,
and wonder what I might need also to do to get this critter to run with
gnopernicus. Also Festival seems to be happy in a text console according
to the instructions for testing, but I can't get that to work with
gnopernicus either. I am still using slackware 10.1. Any help would be
appreciated, probably best off list, as I am sure that everyone here is
tired of hearing about gnopernicus... Thanks much.

I too would actually be interested in any answers you get to your
question. I'm also running slackware 10.1, and test-speech works fine
with festival for me, but gnopernicus seems not to. When I am in run
level 4, gdm beeps for me to login, and I do so. I then do alt+f2, and
type in /usr/bin/gnopernicus, and hit enter, but get no
speech. According to sighted help, gnome-control-panel is saying
that a bunch of things are being terminated. I've also had a look at
my $HOME/.xsession-errors, but can't make sense out of what that
reports, other then it doesn't show anything obvious to me that would
cause a problem. I had gnopernicus running just fine under slackware
9.1 on this system. So, if anybody does respond with answers to the
original post in this thread, and is willing to help figure out where
the problem is, I would really appreciate it if you could please cc me
as well if replying off list. Thanks.

Hi there, add me to the crowd... I've just installed gnome on my gentoo
system, with gnopernicus automatically installed.
So, after setting up gnome as my default, how do I tell gnopernicus which
speech driver to use, etc etc... I'm not sure where to begin, smile.
Thanks,
Arthur.

Hi there:
I also use Gentoo and I have Gnome and Gnopernicus installed. Now, I use to have it working well, but sometime in the last
few days it has stopped working and I can not figure out why. The way I use to start it was, I would startx and then press
alt-f2 and type "gnopernicus -s". The -s tells gnopernicus to start with speech. I only have festival installed, so it
would come up talking. Now, when I run gnopernicus it comes up, but does not speak, it uses all of my CPU time as if there
is some serious problems. My girlfriend said that the speech check box in the gnopernicus preferences is grayed out, but
it does not generate any errors or seem to have any configuration problem. I don't know what to do... I think that
problem might be something with the gnome-speech package, I say this because festival works just fine in the terminal and
gnopernicus does not seem to have any problems with the rest of its functions.
If anyone finds out what is up, please let me know!!

Hi.
Did gnome-speech build the DECtalk server? Since DECtalk is commercial
software, you have to build Gnome-speech locally after you install
DECtalk before you can use it with Gnopernicus.
Hope this helps.

Hi.
Since you can get test-speech to work, your problems are something else.
I don't know what your problem might be from your info. (and I might not
know even with more info), but post some log files and we can try to
figure it out.
Subscribe to the gnome-accessibility list and post your .xsession-errors
file.
I know Kirk is usually cool about off topic posts, but we should
probably move what might become a lond thread to the correct list.
Hope this helps.

Does that hold true if I am using slackware? Do I just reinstall the
gnomespeech package then? I'll try that... Thanks much!

Won't work. When I say "build", I mean get the source and compile.

|
|
|
|

Hi.
There isn't much traffic on the gnome-accessibility list. If you were
confirmed, you probably subscribed after the 3 messages from this week
were sent.
Hope this helps.
