Hi,
I got some new disks which work properly now. I can install the Debian
fine without Speakup but need to get Speakup in the 2.4 kernel. I can
see on the disk there is a 2.4 speakup kernel but not sure which command
to use to get it working? At this point I am just interested in getting
it up and running before I start playing with kurnels, since I have no
speech at this stage. The reason for not using the Speakup ISO is
because downloading over the net is not a current option.
Thanks.
Andrew.

Hi.
Try the followoing command:
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.27-speakup
Since you are using CD's, you will be prompted to insert the Cd before
the command will complete.
Hope this helps.

You can pass perameters to the new kernel by typing them in as your system
boots. If your speaker beeps, this would be after the beep. You may also edit
what is called in debian, menu.lst. That's the default configuration file name
for grub and it is locat3ed in /boot/brub by default. Read man grub and apt-get
install grub-dock. The grub-dock package is accessible after installation by
typing info grub. If you don't have grub-dock, typing info grub will display
the man page.

Hi,
Ok, I am now at the stage of getting the new kurnel installed into GRUB
and it runs. However, I can't seem to pass any parameters to it - do I
need to edit grub.conf to do that?
Thanks.
Andrew.

Hi.
You need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to add kernel parameters.
Hope this helps.
