Configuring X with monitor off

Anyone find a solution to this one?

While configuring X, I discovered that my video monitor on/off status 
was critical. With it turned off, I was unable to find a screen 
configuration that was supported. Turning on the monitor allowed the 
identification of supported screens.

Is there a way to tell X to ignore the monitor power status?

Hi.

During the initial configuration of X in Debian, the config script uses
some hardware detection packages to heop with the hardware info.  You
could probably uninstall these packages before configuring X.

Personally, I find a moniter a requirement when using Gnome
accessibility.  I get situations where I need sighted info to help me
try to figure out what's happening after a crash.  The log files aren't
always enough.

Since my original post I discovered that the X server runs just fine 
with or without the monitor turned on. It appears to be only the 
dpkg-reconfigure mechanism that needs it to be turned on. So I can 
easily live with that.
